Does OTE mean much!?

I haven’t been in the job hunt in over 5 years, but it’s time to change up the cycle. Especially with companies in a hiring frenzy, I want to take advantage of the premium. Question: does OTE really matter that much? Sure you could go in and make that by hitting quota - but what else should you weigh? How do you push for more equity? Etc.

In my experience, it’s never prudent to take the stated OTE at face value without some independent due diligence and beyond that, there are a myriad of factors to evaluate outside of direct compensation.

Potential money doesn't pay my bills. Last time I searched I started targeting a base salary that would allow me to pay all my bills, but also still allow me to save and have some fun money. Commission and bonuses are all fun money to me now, and it has decreased stress immensely.

Companies are willing to pay premiums for good talent because they know their competition is ramping up hiring into the summer. Get what you are worth in a base and ask for a bit more--the worst thing they can say is no. The OTE is always an "if" based on performance and market factors, such as a pandemic. Treat it as an "if".

Ask the company in a given month what percent of reps attain quota, and in a given quarter what percent of reps (in your market) achieve quota.

You can ask the same thing for accelerators.

I think getting a feel for whether you're going to be worked to death/culture is important. Also some companies are pretty generous with their OTE numbers and they are inflated- ask reps if the goals are attainable.

I think enjoying your co-workers is also such an important factor. If you can get a feel for the people you will be working with at the job and find out you like them it might be worth taking a job that doesn't pay as much. Money is important, but not worth being in a miserable job for.

I think OTE is a minimum requirement when considering applying or continuing with an application. I have a rough idea of what I think is a good OTE and then I need to understand the minutia of it(AOV/Average sales cycle/% of people hitting target)

Are there more important things to consider when joining a company? yes, but the money is pretty high up the list. IMO

What an average rep actually makes on a yearly basis.
