Does private equity mean GTFO?

Hey guys,

My company was bought out by private equity a year ago and we went through a merger with another company in our space this year. To say it's been a roller coaster is an understatement.

On the biz dev team. One of two reps left after they fired a bunch of us in June, followed by another round a couple of weeks ago.

Supporting 8 AEs. I accepted another offer with a really good company in July, quit my job, and then took it back because I knew it would take longer to become an AE and I was on the verge of promotion to ISR from SDR. That's a half-baked promotion in between SDR and AE that means nothing apart from a pay bump because they fired all the "SDRs."

The numbers my team(of two) has to hit are ridiculous.

Now I'm shadowing to become an AE(the only reason I'm still here) and I'm finding out that none of the AEs hit quota and their quotas just got bumped way up for next year....

Not exactly the ideal environment to become a great rep, plus I could see private equity selling us again in 2 years and having to go through all this reorganization bullshit again. It's also going to probably take at least another 6 months until I get to AE, assuming they can backfill the 6 open positions on my team(not looking great).

Should I jump ship if I know none of the AEs are hitting quota and I'm going to be stuck on the SDR hamster wheel indefinitely?

I’d rather be an SDR from scratch with growth potential than an AE in a company with 0 shot of hitting quota. But I’d find an early stage startup and shoot for an SMB AE role. Absolutely no Eason to stay where you’re at in my opinion.

I'm still not sure why you stayed other than fear of being happy.

PE is the meat grinder, or maybe Sid from Toy Story. They take nice things, grind them up and use the parts they like to create Frankenstein's monster. PE rarely ends well, and when it does you have lost part of your soul in the process.

PE sucks. Low budgets, no training, lots of change, little growth potential.

Find a start up and get a full cycle AE role. Sell your hustle and ability to set meeting to the startup and start reading books around selling to show you are a self learner.

Way more upside IMO

This is a sales org issue, not a PE issue. Yes, PE has control over leadership, but normally don't have any involvement in the day-to-day aspect and execution unless they are installing operating partners.

Source: Worked for 3 orgs who have all been PE owned, and PE/VC is the current market I sell to. My experience has been very good with all of them

I have to know, were you acquired by Thoma Bravo/Nintex? This is exactly how acquisitions went down when I was working with them.

There plenty of orgs that have auto promotion criteria and you can be an AE in 6 months after taking an SDR role. Find a product that is strong in the SMB space or lower mid market that does out outbound and build your cold prospecting skills. There no rush to be a closer if you aren’t ready. It can actually take you back.
