Does "Social Selling" on LinkedIn work?

It seems a lot of people say social selling is the wave of the future, and that everyone spends all their free time hanging out on LinkedIn. I get it is a fantastic platform and I've used it to make connections, but the idea that posting content will bring people into my orbit seems like a farce. Most C-level execs I target barely have a profile page....

I think it can work. There's a fine line of creating valuable content and looking like you're desperate for any kind of views/communication.

Amen. I feel like a lot of people are creating content to create content, sometimes myself included. Made me question why

I have seen success out-bounding on LinkedIn, yes.

But posting random stuff to attract passive views and hopes that those views will turn into an inbound lead is useless in my opinion. "social selling" is what led to the rise in LinkedIn "Influencers". It may be different for other people, but most of my prospects barely use LinkedIn so they wouldn't see anything I post anyway.

My thoughts too. Posting for an audience seems more relevant for B2C or 'consulting' type services.

I know someone (they are actually in here but I don’t think they visit often) who absolutely gets business this way. He’s very, very good at it - and not the “influencer” bs kind of way. His posts are all text, no emojis, no fluff. Short, sweet, explaining the complicated industry one point at at time. He posts every day.

I haven’t seen anyone else be as successful.

I connect with every prospect I meet as a way of humanising myself and engage with their posts, but it's definitely a minor part of my process. LinkedIn is more a personal brand builder than a sales tool for me.

I normally always add the person I am prospecting, maybe a week after first contact. If they accept, I then tend to see how active they are on Linkedin. E.g, if you can never get close via a phone call, it might be due to them preferring email/linkedin. I will like a few of their posts and maybe comment once in a while and then send them a message. Very few and far in between with it working but just another touch point to get in their heads!

Ive had some success interacting with prospects posts in building rapport. Unless your content is very good and curated to prospects interests it doesn't help too too much.

Interesting one this is, I personally don’t rate it. Don’t get me wrong I have made some great contacts on there but nothing quite beats picking the phone up or knocking on their door

Completely agree. It has it's place, but I don't see how B2B buyers are on there 'shopping' for solutions. At least they haven't been in my experience.
