Does the company you work at matter for your resume?

Edit: I'm still fairly new to Bravado but I guess these posts are anonymous, so I'll just name the company: Clipboard Health

There's a company (which I wont name) that seems to always be hiring for SDRs. I reached out to a few past employees and didn't get much response but the one that I did get was negative (but they didn't go into detail). They just said, 'yeah, they suck.' I posted about this on the sales subreddit as well, I named the company too and some people told me to avoid it, again, no real detail, but one person told me to 'run far away from agency staffing companies', which is true of this company. It's an agency placement company in the medical field.

The point is, I'm suspicious of this company. They tend to hire globally, and I will just say, most of their employees seem to be from disenfranchised countries. I hope this doesn't sound insensitive, but even some of the Glassdoor reviews made this point that it's really not suitable for long term work unless you are severely desperate.

Here's the thing; I don't mind working at a crap company, I just want to have SDR on my resume (long story about why, don't want to give too much away cause I'm paranoid about one of their employees being here lol). This would be a personal achievement for me, but the only thing I'm worried about is the reputation of the company. Like I said they are always hiring it seems, and the people they tend to hire (just from what I can tell) tend to be desperate (again, hope that doesn't sound insensitive). Would future employees take me less seriously if I worked for a bad company (even if I hit my metrics)?

I would like to say that only results matter, but that’s not always the case. Company names do matter. Sometimes more than results.

That said, if it’s only for the summer and they pay well - go for it. It will fall off your resume soon enough.

I will say also that it’s good to see a bad company so you recognize a good one (warts and all) when you see it.

Sometime it does, sometime it doesn’t. Did you check repvue that might add more insights. If I am not convinced with the company, I’ll never join. On the other if I am desperate without any other opportunities, I’ll definitely look at it positively.

All the best!

Question: Why can't you look for that SDR job at a better company?

But - on the other hand, Pachacuti is right. Only the summer, you'll get the title, and honestly, unless the company is known for instilling bad sales habits in reps, it won't make a difference. I'd hazard a guess that most reps have a company on their CV that they're not thrilled to have worked at.

I can look for a better company, but it's very hard to break in right now obviously so for now I'll take what I can get. I have other interviews though, so we'll see.

Honestly, I'd be vetting any company (reviews, backchanneling) so you at least know what you're getting into. But if you can avoid crap companies and being miserable, that would be best.

“Yeah, I worked there and didn’t find it unbearable at all. The company wanted results. I gave them results.” This can be a powerful differentiator. And a Summer never hurt anyone.

This is where I'm torn. I recognize and respect the clear goal as well as the short term commitment required. So when I give advice to keep looking just in case there's something better, I can see that this wouldn't be the end of the world, either.

Yeah, honestly I don’t have either “do it” or “don’t do it” as a clear winner. There’s possible value on both sides. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I believe It won't matter that much as long as you made some good numbers at it.
And since you have some concerns about it that could be valid or even not, why don't you just take the safe side and search for that role somewhere else at a different reputable company that's currently hiring SDRs!

Did you see Gasty’s hiring post for SDRs? Might want to search keyword hiring. He links to previous posts in the current one, so find one, you’ve found the rest. Best of luck.
