Does your company RESPEK sales reps?

So we're pretty much second class citizens in my current place, as compared to the engg team.

The team including leadership is engg heavy and there's about a 110 of them vs the 20 people who make up sales, marketing and HR teams.

We're held accountable for every hour some engineer spends with us on a call if the deal doesn't close. On the flip side, if they fuck up which leads to us losing the deal - the fact that we've spent months chasing this account/opportunity doesn't get acknowledged at all.

At first I used to not let this bother me, but now it is starting to irk me. None of these folks would get paid if we didn't put in the hours and close. You wouldn't be building softwares if we didn't stay up at 2 in the night to speak with clients on the other side of the world.

The commission is what keeps me happy and feel "credited". But god damn, put some fucking RESPEK on our names.

Is it the same at your companies? How are you guys acknowledged/credited?

PS. I'm sorry if this came across as bitchy. I wanted to rant.

I've never felt respected in any sales role. I've had a non-sales former colleague outright tell me smart people don't get into sales. 3 different SaaS companies as a top performer, 2 as SDR and 1 as AE. In all 3 I've had marketing talk down to me like I'm 5 about the proper process to follow up their terrible, waste of time leads. They fail to make any impact on the business and coast by for years. A rep has a couple of bad quarters? They're out the door.

Bless their little heart.

Also, we don't respect marketing that much so that's a wash 😆

Companies with Technical founders can be tough. If they can’t let go of their “baby” and let sales do their thing, it may be time to find another gig.

When we do our jobs people like us but still joke we're sleazy. When we don't do our jobs they worry about losing theirs. It is the circle of life.

Sales is and should always be prize of the company. The orgs that don't have a sales first mentality can be really hard to work for.

If the company culture is not sales oriented, buckle up for a long, discouraging career with them.

If the company culture is not sales oriented, buckle up for a long, discouraging career with them.  I just left such and organization and it is hard to do especially if you are successful - it becomes golden handcuffs.  I was able to put three through college, pay off my house, and create saving... pandemic killed our industry which made the timing perfect.  My advice: get out while you can. That toxic environment will suck the life out of your soul.

Fortunately, where I work, it's very sales focused.

If I don’t get respect it don’t give it. Pretty clear to me. Sales people are professionals within a very skilled and competitive qualities.

also we have a huge impact on businesses. Where do they think the revenues come from?

Exactly! The work you put in is what pays their salaries at the end of the day.

Yes! Exactly! If they disrespect you just ignore it. If they annoy you, throw that in their face.

I guess I’m lucky in the sense that every company I’ve worked has treated the sales team as the golden child.
There’s still a lot of expectations on your shoulders though. The product team can fail to deliver a simple integration for a year and still keep their jobs while a salesperson would be long gone if they don’t close anything for a year.
