Dope Sick

I'm watching this show on Hulu and it has me thinking.  Has anyone here worked for Purdue Pharma?  Also, if you had a chance to work for a company like this could you overlook the obvious downside for the fat commission checks?

I, for one, could not.  I wouldn't be able to process that.  But, ya know, different strokes...

If I had prior experience in the pharma industry, and I knew that upping the dosage on a narcotic (with 0 studies to back the non-addictive claims) was a proof-point of addiction, then I'd be blowing that whistle harder than a raver rolling on E.

Whistle blowing, while necessary, seems like a tough road.  Sort of like testifying against the mob.  It's definitely the right thing to do but would I do it?  I'm not so sure.

I haven't seen the show so I can't comment on that specific scenario.

Would I work in Pharma? Depends. What's the money like? Who am I representing? Not into the idea of shilling for opiates but I could shill for heartburn medication if the price was right.

My company is literally running a campaign that helps lawfirms in their suit against Zantac because that medication has fucked a lot of people up and killed quite a few as well haha.

All rx drugs have the potential to be dangerous and hurt people. Then again, so does alcohol and tobacco.

It's not my industry of choice, that's for sure. I might not have much of a soul but I'm not a complete monster.

Haha my point exactly. Honestly I wouldn't have a problem with it if I found out after the fact. But I'd have to bow out as soon as I knew what I was selling was no bueno or if I found out that my company was knowingly cutting corners and thus putting folks at risk.

Really? Companies that do ethical things yet still are profitable?

Boy do I have a Unicorn for you!

Here's a free lesson: there is no reason, nor does any firm have an obligation to do anything other than make money. That is their only objective. Morality is dictated by profitability. If being ethical makes more revenue, then the reverse is also true. This is why we (are supposed to have) laws and regulations to make unethical and immoral practices cost prohibitive. Unfortunately, we currently live in an oligarchy so corrupt that shit floats.

Like, why does Wall Street not pay taxes?

Why would a firm knowingly allow for a certain number of deaths from a defective product because it's cheaper to settle the lawsuits than use quality materials?

I could continue, but I'm sure you get the point.

No paycheck is worth that IMO. Its wild watching how people justify it that do work in that field. Just putting their own mind in a blender trying to make it ok.

Nah, I don't think I could sleep at night if I did.
We only get one run at life so I'd prefer to sell only what I know will help or improve people's lives.

That's a slippery slope for sure.  Would you sell guns?  Weed?  Alcohol?  All have the potential to help or hurt, depending on the user.

In my early years I wanted to get into Pharma, had some friends that did it and made insane money. Now, I question their ethics and those of most medical professionals, tbh.

Since I enjoy selling a solution that doesn't actually ruin people's lives, I know I would have a hard time selling something that could be so destructive.   I'd work elsewhere, as I do.

I had been selling technical product pertaining to product testing to Pharma industry and never enjoyed the process (not in n.america though)

I haven't seen this but I know what you're talking about. My first pharma job was selling opioids. We did nothing like this. It's sick.

I think this is a personal decision.  I always fall back to can I lay my head on my pillow at night knowing the choices I made and be okay.  I think there are times when you have mouths to feed and bills to pay and glory and glamour lose to need.  I think there are times when choosing is easier.  Know that if you don't choose it there will be someone else who will choose to sell it, always is.  It is hard and your choice will evolve I think as we do as people and professionals.

I get it.  I'm not sure Purdue is hiring people that "need" a job.  I'd suspect the line of candidates is long and their ideal candidate fits a specific profile.

What j&j and big pharma did to the rust belt and mid western states is abhorrent.

No doubt the money is bonkers, but I wouldn't be able to look at myself if I was working in an industry that was slinging "legal" dope and killing people.

Nope, I feel the same way as you - I'm loving the show so far and can relate to the main guy rep who just get sucked in and it becomes a slippery slope. I can't imagine living with that guilt the rest of my life.

Haven't watched the show, but have had moral dilemmas when approached for jobs before.

I'd do pharma for the right product, or medical industry for the right product. Opiates or other self destructive, and heavily addictive drugs would be tough.

Fresh out of college my only job prospect was for Big Tobacco. I turned them down because fuck selling cancer. I'd rather be unemployed.

I have a bookie friend who exclusively lets friends bet with him so he knows they'll pay and I asked him about the morals of taking money from friends and his response was that if he didn't do it someone else would so why shouldn't he? In the same manner if you want to make $$$$$ usually there's cons that come with it. Morally it's wrong but financially it's right, the question becomes how strong are you in your morals?
