Double Tax Commission

Is it legal for a company to double tax commission if a field in SFDC isn't updated correctly?

Need a little clarification here bud.

Is it more apt to say they're docking your comission due to SFDX fields being incorrectly filled out? If so, what does your contract say about your comission?

Likely they have a clawback/we can change value at our discretion clause.

@InQ5WeTrust here's the update: "Sales! We have the unique opportunity to work with many tax exempt orgs including schools, non-profits and the like. It is the responsibility of the sales rep to ask if their new account is tax exempt and to get that tax exempt certificate. If you don't, tax will be added, the client will be annoyed, accounting will be annoyed and payment will be delayed. don't skip this critical step or we'll have to double-tax your commission."

I might be over-reacting, but it seems like this in enablement once again misunderstanding how hard it can be to bring in revenue.

So you didn't get tax exempt cert from new client and now your accounting team has to calculate taxes and revise invoice to client.

I still don't understand what "double taxing" commission means.

Why didn't you just... Do your job as a sales pro?

This is an asinine email. Mistakes in tax-exempt filings are a sales ops/deal desk issue that can be resolved in one email or phone call. They should not threaten to illegally tax your commissions unless they mean clawing back an amount that reflects the proper size of the deal. That said, we don't pay out commissions on the deal inclusive of tax, so why are they even considering that as a scenario?

Based off this email you received, I'd have to agree with @braintank ... It's not hard to ask procurement if they're tax exempt or not and if they have that form. I used to have to do this a lot when I worked with government.

That being said though, at first, I would get annoyed when finance wouldn't process the sale through our system without that piece of information but now understand that what your team has made you aware of is exactly why. By you getting that certificate right away, finance doesn't have to double their workload...

Maybe you’re not used to marginal tax? Is that what is going on?
Your base would be your income tax, your commission would be marginal tax, maybe even max capital gains depending on how it’s paid?
I’m confused by your question with little details.
It’s a joke but we’ve all had it sometimes. You hit quota at 100% and make $10. Then you crush quota by 400% and make $14.34 and you’re like WHAT?!? Is that what is going on?

I'm still not understanding what "double tax" means here... it sounds to me as if you're using 'tax' in a non-governmental sense. Are you saying you're financially penalized for incorrect classification in SFDC?

If they overtax you enough they take negative money and send you an invoice to pay.
But real talk, how are they "double-taxing" you? Twice the percentage?
Also what box would that even be?

This may not be a great answer, but regardless of how they deduct taxes from your paycheck, you still will do your taxes at the end of the year and get a refund if you overpaid.
Personally, I never mind over paying by a little bit (I know, I know - opportunity lost for that money). At the end of the year, I’m a lot happier if I’m getting some money back instead of having to pay…

I feel the same way.

Although, based on comments, it looks like he's talking about some weird tax exempt stuff..
