Dream company + poor compensation = ??

I recently locked down a B2C sales position at my dream company (one I've been a long time paid member of) and the compensation is not great (60k salary with no commission).ย

I want to craft a smart approach to my direct supervisor asking for support in charting my career with this organization, such as milestones and pathways for my income and overall position. I don't have a great deal of experience with negotiations of this nature and would love some feedback!

while I love the work and the company is growing fast, I am making less than I have in a long time and came in with leadership experience from multiple reputable and similar organizations so I feel my current position is under utilizing my talents and somewhat of a step backwards.

we are also as a company starting to do more enterprise level deals, so I am tempted to bring up the possibility of moving towards that as well. it's an area I would like to continue to build my skill set and I love the scope of impact that it brings for clients.ย

any words of advice are much appreciated!๐Ÿ™

While this might be a dream company it doesn't seem like a dream job.

You have 18 years experience and want to work for $60K total comp?! That doesn't make sense to me. Nor does anything in sales with no variable.

Also, how do enterprise deals fit in with B2C?

Also if you spy LinkedIn Matt doesnโ€™t have 18 years of experience. Itโ€™s 8 years. Still doesnโ€™t make any sense tho

This is tough. You could tell them what you've written here and follow up with contributions that you'll be making to their org, to see if they'll budge on pay. If not and you're unable to live on that salary (but fr, 60k with no commish is crazy), then maybe the timing just isn't right.

End of the day it is all about the money. We sell our time and talent for a fee. If what they are paying you is off target for your skills and experience, is it worth taking. There are loads of companies that I would like to work for in theory but I do this for the money and so do you. Don't sell your time for less than it is worth.

Youโ€™re facing a headwind not having had those conversations before you signed on.

Out of curiosity, what made you so excited to join you signed up regardless of income?

well Matt Jakstis, if the company is something you'd like people to see on your resume 5-10 years from now and you think it will add future value - stick with it. If not, get out of there.

Congratulations on your new role at Ashley Madison!

Seriously though sales is for the money man - dreams are for what you do once you get that money. The line of shit, "love what you do and don't work a day in your life" just isn't real outside of a Columbian nose clam QA position. It's more, "don't completely hate what you do and let it give you enough money to do what you love when you clock out".

Best of luck MJ.

What makes this a dream company? If the comp plan is under-market (sounds like it) and during the interview process, there was no discussion on career development within the org (as youโ€™d have a sense of that), then getting satisfaction from selling a really strong product / service will only last so long if other needs are not being met.
Also depends on timingโ€ฆif you have only just started and so no time yet to show clear value, I would be cautious at raising the issue of advancement so early on. You need some leverage as part of that discussionโ€ฆ.evidence of exceeding KPIs or proactively helping with tasks outside of your core role. Make sure you start building cross-functional relationships and increase your visibility in the business so when other roles or opportunities for progression appear, you have others (who may have influence on new roles) on your side.
