Dress code for Zoom meetings with prospects

You would think that with my ICP being high end law firms and the DM is almost always the managing partner of the firm, that we would be super sharp on zoom calls, you might even imagine I wear a tie when we are talking about high six, potentially seven figure deals. Nope.

Lawyers, as hard as it is to believe, are normal people too. They get that it's not ideal to wear a suit and tie for every social engagement or business meeting. The reality is, most of them forego the suit and tie on days that they know they won't be interacting with judges.

So what's the rule of thumb? Look well put together but comfortable, essentially just put in enough effort to not appear sloppy.

I often times wear nice plain T-shirts. No graphics or writing on them. If it's someone that strikes me as a little more formal than most, I'll put on a polo or flannel, hell, I'm not against a Hawiian shirt in those situations.

Also, I'm almost guaranteed to have a ballcap on at any given time that I'm not facing clients in person. My biggest close ever, 1.2M, I was wearing a red flannel with a plain brown ball cap.

Don't overthink what you're wearing. The reality is, nobody expects you to wear a tie on a zoom call unless they're a judge and you're in zoom court.

Unless otherwise informed to, I keep it business casual. Never full blown casual and never really full blown business.

I never get more formal than a polo and the only way I'm not wearing a hat is if I recently had my hair cut and doing my hair requires minimal effort.

However, for anything in person the only thing that would make it more formal is the addition of a tie. I'm even rocking the wingtips

My hair and makeup are always done for camera. I would never wear a hat for a client meeting. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm vehemently opposed to hats on prospect calls.

Absolutely. Though the way I look at it, from a purely utilitarian perspective is that no one is going to be put off by someone not wearing a hat, but some might take issue with someone wearing one.

Totally fair point. The reality is though if a prospect doesn't want to buy from me because I wore a hat on a call, they'd likely be one of the biggest pains in the ass to deal with and not at all worth my time.

If the guy viewed that as an outright DQ in working together, then I'd agree. For me it's just not a positive thing. I posted a thread about it awhile ago.

The guy showed up to pitch me in a hat. It wouldn't make me not choose the solution if I had felt it was the best fit, but it just stuck with me... I guess I'm just a little old school like that.

I can see that from someone in sales leadership. As salesmen, we're constantly critiquing when someone else is selling to us. However, It's rare that I'm serious about anything so I wouldn't think twice about what someone was wearing on a call so long as they didn't look sloppy

Luckily as a man I'm not expected to wear makeup so you ladies definitely have some extra effort that has to be put in. However, I've found that dressing authentic is the absolute best way default for zoom meetings. I'm a T-shirt and hat guy in real life so that's what I am on my calls. Granted, being from Wyoming is kind of my hook. Hell, when my CEO introduces me to big players in our space he makes a point of mentioning that the first time we met in person was in Puerto Vallarta over lunch and I was in a flannel, jeans, and boots. At conferences when meeting new folks it's not uncommon to hear, "Are you the guy from Wyoming?"

I guess my point here is that authenticity hits better than formality.

Works for me anyways. Too many people overthink dress code for virtual meetings.

Honestly my rule is to shower and have the hair put together.

Doesnt matter if you a wearing a suit or polo or t shire, if it looks like you just woke up thats a bad look.

If I ever get a last minute client meeting, I have a company hat I throw on as a last resort

My mom is from Laramie, so it warms my heart to see Wyoming represented here!

If I know I'm headed into a presentation or demo, I have a nice shirt or sweater on - usually those are with larger groups and executives, and I'm going to show respect by dressing the part.

If it's existing customers/update meetings, etc., my 1/4 zip pullovers or more casual wear are my go-to.

I keep a branded zip near me in case I get a last minute invite to hop on a call.

Agree with you here, typically I'll wear a plain t-shirt or polo and make sure hair/everything else looks clean for zoom meetings.

Our rule for dress code on zooms is to look clean whereas in person meets "just look money". Straight from the CEO.

Hell I had a zoom once where the guy I was selling to was just finishing a run and hopped on sweaty and breathing hard. Set his tablet on his kitchen counter, poured himself a glass of wine and got comfortable. Ended with him requesting an invoice and contract for 250k. I had a t-shirt and ball cap

Haha that's amazing. Our company doesn't have a dress code for zooms, but personally I lean towards being clean & presentable to prospects regardless.

What gives YOU confidence in the person you are dealing with, and possibly spending thousand or even millions of dollars?

I always have a shirt with a collar on for external meetings. I keep it on a hanger in my home office. Costs me nothing to wear it and people will judge you on your appearance.

Hardcore depends on magnitude of the call. For real though one time I dressed up for a 1:1 and my report thought I was going to shitcan them.
