Ever since becoming a people manager I have adopted a one-drink rule, then I switch to soda and limes to keep up the appearance of drinking. At my last spot we had several sober employees, so it made it a lot easier to ease off the sauce. That said, there are plenty of cultures that look down on you for not going hard...even the 55-year-old married guys who treat a night out like a hall pass. Hate that shit.

The soda and lime is a genius idea, going to steal that. I normally just walk around with a half empty beer when I want to be done drinking... no one ever tries to get you a new drink if you have a half full one, and you only get the "quit baby sitting" comments with a full one.ย

But a virgin drink all together, idk why I never thought of that.

Personally, I wouldn't judge if someone didn't drink. I guess it depends on your coworkers and their level of understanding.

I think it depends on how I feel about my co-workers at the time. Typically the happier I am, the less I drink because I think they're fun without it. If I'm absolutely blitzed then it probably means the people with me are zero fun in my book.ย

I'm a social drinker, and there's someone on my team who doesn't drink at all. We just make sure to stock sodas for outside parties. Honestly, a culture that makes you feel pressured to drink when you don't want to doesn't sound all that healthy in the long run.

I dont drink more than one drink, if any with my reports present. Old habits. The boss doesnt drink with the crew. Gotta keep the mystery.

Order a soda water with a lime to give the appearance that you're drinking so nobody bothers/judges you.

I don't drink in general so i never drink at company parties, but if i did i would probably limit it just to avoid a situation that could cause a workplace issue, which if thats who you are you prob shouldnt drink anyway shrug sorry

Haha... no, it wasn't me that was the issue recently. However I feel a sort of "guilt by association" for having been participating in the festivities that led to a situation. Also- I should clarify, it's nothing earth shattering- just a drunk CEO saying things he shouldn't say. It made me feel like if I hadn't been drinking I could have prevented a portion of it though.ย

I always have up until this point! I've also been the person who is fine with doing/saying stupid shit in front of everyone and not being embarrassed the next day! (I've never done anything *too* ridiculous)ย

But current dynamics are just making me question this approach.ย

Yeah. Drink away, but dont get drunk. If you have to ask yourself if youโ€™re having too much, you probably are. Try drinking a water with a lemon and a lime in it between bevvies.

I feel like I gave the wrong impression with this post. I'm not the one with the issue when drinking- but I feel like it's harder to argue a case if both parties are drinking. However, if you're literally the only one *not* drinking when historically you've been part of the party, I wondered how that lands in a company whos culture is surrounded by "fun" and "party" vibes.ย

AKA- my boss has said some straight up ridiculous (read:mean) shit to me while drunk at two different functions in the past 6 months and I find it hard/hypocritical to address while sober when I was also drinking at said company functions.

Ahhh, wow. Totally over my head initailly, I get what youโ€™re putting down now. This is a tough one. I woukd get a feel from others if they felt your boss is out of line in that instance. If so, id say something to the boss, pull them aside away from everyone. If they blow up on you be prepared to contact HR. If you can come from a place of caring for them and standing up for yourself it should be fine. Do you have anyone you can discuss the matter with that you work with which isnt HR?

@justatip.topproducerย ...I work at a VERY small company. We don't have HR, and I'm one of 2 in the entire sales department. Which is why I'm in kind of an awkward position here. My boss/owner keeps getting drunk and saying things, then apologizing the next day, then next time he gets drunk he says the same things again.ย

Strange dynamic because when he's sober he says I'm doing amazing and actually gave me a crazy hefty base increase recently. But drunk-boss says the exact opposite, and in a really strange & mean way. Its a hard situation to navigate- like, am I actually exceeding expectations and you just like to be an asshole when you're drunk (which I will gladly deal with for the right pay)? Or am I actually doing as poorly as you describe but you only have the balls to tell me when you're drunk? If it's door #2, then quit being a [cannot think of politically correct word..] and TEACH me instead of telling me to "get into deals and you'll learn by working them" then just doing all of the work yourself once I do get in deals.ย

Drink water and hydrate between your bevies. Carry around a beer or a glass of tonic and a lime with a hint of gin so people can smell it. There are plenty of tricks to use so you can stay sober.ย

I guess because it's never really been a problem for me, I've never had to think about how to appear/be sober at an event. But I LOVE these tips. Def putting that to use. If only to avoid taking so many years off my liver. ha!

It shouldnโ€™t be a big deal at all if someone doesnโ€™t drink at a function.

The opposite (not holding back) does not ALWAYS lead to a solid evening.ย

I feel like I might need to edit this post to add that my concern is less with my own drinking than others that I work with, whos behavior I feel like, if I'm sober, I can contest more so than if I've had any drinks.

However if it's you and your team at an unofficial happy hour, go off
