Worked at a place where management called an all hands and instructed us to read empathetic selling strategies and build playbooks around "selling with empathy".

Empathy is absolutely an important trait to practice, especially in sales.

The ability to truly put yourself in the other person's shoes and see their feelings and thoughts is hard. It's super hard to let go of your personal thoughts and put the other person first. However, it's not impossible. This is the one of the best ways to establish and build trust.

Couldn't agree more. Really trying to understand the challenge / impact / value from the prospects shoes is crucial for building trust and strategically surfacing the value of the product you are trying to sell. 

Reading about empathic strategies is a good start but the best way to improve is to actively do it live on calls. No better practice than live calls.

It is necessary to understand what pains to use and which ones are important. Understanding your client is the best way to sell them. Empathy means feeling what they feel. This is the best way to understand them.
