Ever have a shitty manager you couldn't stand working with?

Most of us I'm sure have been in this position at some point in their career. What was the thing your manager did or said that put you over the edge to start looking elsewhere?

I'll start: I worked at a company for about 18 months. Over the last 6 months I was there, my manager threatened me with a PIP and gave little advice to help dig myself out of the hole I was in. The one conversation that still sticks out to me was when I asked how to handle a particular process within a deal I was working on. After he explained it to me like I had an IQ of 20, he then mentioned that based on my tenure, this is something I should already know. I never asked him another question.

I went about 4 days on that PIP plan, and decided to leave after seeing this situation was not getting any better. Best part is, a few weeks after I left, he left the company for another role.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I had a truly terrible manager I was pretty confident I'd outlast (I did). He was such a fucking idiot and would constantly say he'd do things and then not do them. Cost me several grand in commission by killing deals as well.

There is nothing worse than having a manager that cares more about his perusal success than that of the team.

Agreed.ย  What was strange was that no one else on my team was really seeing this.ย  Definitely led to me thinking 'WTH am I doing wrong here?'ย

Made more sense to me to just take a step back from what was going on and hit the reset button.ย

Yup.ย

Two stand out. One was a restaurant manager at a place I served at. He was a very unhinged person who would verbally abuse the staff in front of other staff and customers. Sometimes he'd come crawling back apologizing, but never changed his behaviour. Created such a toxic situation, everyone was super happy when he left.ย

The other was a manager I had who was the definition of "useless middle management." She spent most of her time monitoring our work and micromanaging and offered nothing of value in terms of feedback, coaching, or support.ย

The managers that never actually do anything they say they will do unless you ask them 3-4 times. Yes.

I feel you. Out of the blue I went through something similar at the start of January, got to the point I had to call the CEO and just tell him what's going on. It's tough, but getting yourself out of the situation is the best solution.ย

God yes.

Micro-managing and metrics without context are the worst things to me.

Yes saw that much more after working remotely.ย  I remember the start of those last 6 months he was concerned with my effort based on being vague with CRM notes, and time-stamped me being 5 minutes late to an all hands meeting (technical difficulties).ย  When I told him it sounds like I'm not trusted, he said that's what you're saying, and continued on with the points he was making.
