Ever hooked up with a prospect/customer?

I'm sure we all saw @GeneralCorp 's IG posts about hooking up with co-workers. I'm wondering if anyone has any stories about drunken nights post trade show / convention / on-site visit with a prospect or customer. Anyone done it or seen a co-worker do it?

We had a CXO make an attempt and resulted in his quick and public termination. Propositioned 2 female prospects for a threesome at a bar one night during our big annual event. He had been on the job less than a month.

Ever seen this happen?

Ok. So I won't say if this happened to me or not but the person in this story was a much younger person and known for being a bit ridiculous. He still might be.

So 100M deal. He nails it. Months of work. Young 20 something. And he hits a 100M deal. Which even for a decent sized company is a fair bit of cash. On the other side of the deal is a nice woman, shes a few years older and she's the AM maybe? Possibly just the AA. Anyway whatever, every guy and girl in the office would talk when she walked in.

So deal is done and signed and good to go. He says something along the lines of So, before we part ways, you wanna throw all caution to the wind and knock one out. She tells him shes not that easy. And he says Okay well we can grab a copy of when harry met sally and a 4 pack of bacardi breezers and see what happens, or we can skip the trip to unnecessaryland and just have at it.

So this person walks out of the mens bathroom. Followed by woman. And I guess some angry married chick saw them. Went and told the vp. The vp hauls him into her office and says Listen, you're an idiot, but you just brought in 100M. If anyone from our side asks anything about this you are to reply, "Im not allowed to talk about that" and for the love of Christ, if anyone on the other side asks, you swear that you do not know what theyre talking about. Now, what happened between you and that woman?" He says "I'm not allowed to talk about it." She said "perfect. Now get out of here because you are such a pain in the ass you honestly make me feel like hurting myself."

And he walked out with a big grin on his face knowing that he was bulletproof.

I thought the same. I've been retired 3 times now.. I get bored. One thing I have never worried about is climbing the ladder though. So I guess it brought me that freedom.

Haha. You need to sell corporate to get deals like that. And it helps if it isnt software. That was mostly hardware and infrastructure that made that deal.

i was thinking about this the other day, some companies who get involved in monster infrastructure projects, a 100m deal is probably not that ridiculous.  It sounds it to those of us who dabble in the 100ks and 1ms.

Exactly. In software 100M is huge because its straight profit. We just did a boardroom in my office. 300k. For one. Now imagine that boardroom tech salesman, say he sells JP Morgan new board rooms, how many do you think they have? Thousands. There's 300M+.

Wow yeh exactly that.  And i was watching a documentary last week about the Merdeka tower in Malaysia and was thinking whoever gets the steel, concrete, glass or fitout contracts for that is talking 100's and 100's of millions of $$.  The total building cost is $1.5b and i guess thats before fitout even.  What kind of commish does one get on a 100m deal?

I was gonna use glass but I know nothing about glass so I went with boardrooms lol.

It depends on the margin... so for most business sales margin is 30 to 40 points. For consumer its 20 to 25. High end consumer can be closer to 30 to 35 depending on. Now in his case 100M was the biggest single deal the company had ever seen at that time, this is going back a number of years too. But say he squeezed it to get it across the line. So say it was 28 points. Margin is 28M. His cut would have been about 5M. But it all depends on what that margin was.

thats a pretty healthy percentage of margin.  I need your...his job haha! I was offered 5% of margin at a company that averages 50-60% margin on deals.  Seem low or about right?

It all depends... lol. I've seen 10% on 30-40% margin. I've seen 16% on 35% margin. Back in those days it was almost 20% on a 30-40% margin. But it really depends on the industry. If you're in tech I find the pay structures to lean more to the top. So your boss takes a bigger cut than my boss. And same with your bosses boss.

Im not in tech, im in a b2b trading company which probably reflects that.  I also think that in the UK we traditionally work with much lower commission levels than the US, at least it seems that way.  In fact, my estimation is that a big proportion of UK sales reps are more happy to work for a higher fixed salary than in a commission structure.

But 20% of margin is fairly amazing but actually makes sense if it is you the sales rep who basically makes it happen.  I recently won the largest deal in the company i work for and they are being anal about my commission.

Haha yes. Sorry I assume everyone is from America here. So that makes a lot more sense. Europe and most of the 1st world, operate with the idea that you pay someone a living wage first. Canada and especially the US operate a bit differently with a more 'screw it, starve' mentality. So yes you get less, but you also werent as hungry when you first started out like a lot of the people here. I'm a big fan of paying people properly, even if it does suck when you get a big win and it isn't as big as it could be in the US.

Answered Yes - but not me... so seen it happen. I sell financial product, so there's a lot of recurring business and therefore requires continued meetings with supporters.

Story goes that the client - a very fine looking MILF-y type - used to schedule quarterly updates which were basically opportunities for my buddy to go in to her office, get behind her desk while she literally knelt down beneath her desk and proceeded to go to work until he finished all over her face.

She'd then clean up, thank him for the 'service call' and send him on his way. Without fail a couple million in business would follow within a couple of weeks.

Not sure why I didn't write this in the original post, but I just remembered a guy who got canned for this during my time as a military recruiter.  We recruited officers (have to be a college grad to become an officer) so we pretty much lived on college campuses.  Recipe for disaster for a person with no discipline.  It came out that one guy had gotten one of his prospects pregnant.  As they pulled the string on the whole ordeal, it turned out that he had been having sex with several of his female prospects, many times in the government vehicle that he used to get wherever he needed to be in his territory, and oftentimes his male assistant was right alongside him in the action - same car with a couple of girls.  Anyway, this guy ended up threatening to kill himself if the pregnant girl came forward (which he did not end up doing thank goodness).  He was married the whole time this was all occurring.

A couple of months into my first recruiting gig we lost one of our largest local clients and our AM for that account was promptly fired. It was a pretty big deal, but no one really seemed to know what happened. The dude was a cool enough guy, pretty normal, and had a good track record, so it was strange. Turns out, he and the hiring manager were caught by her boss f*cking in their office. Also turns out, in some sort of deposition or whatever, she admitted that she had specifically hired some of our candidates solely because of her sexual relationship with our AM.

I was pretty low on the totem pole at that point so I just heard things through the grapevine, but it was a wild ordeal. The whole thing seemed a lot like the Meredith 'steaks & sex in exchange for discounts' situation in The Office lol.

By nature i keep a fairly distant relationship with my prospects.  Not that i dont get on with any of them but my approach has always been im not looking for new friends and you probably arent either.  That said, you do come across some people that make you second guess that but i never have thought its worth the risk.

Had a client in Dallas who thought he was hot shit.  Hit on everything that moved. I flew in one day for a meeting with said douchebag and found a carpet cleaner in his office.  Inquiring minds want to know, so I ask 'what's up?" of the carpet cleaner. He proceeds to tell me how getting lipstick out of the carpet is one of the hardest things to do. And from the looks of things, there was a lot of lipstick in many places.

Couple of weeks later, I get a call from his EA about how he came on to her and they did it on his desk. Now he's threatening to fire her and has hired someone to scare her by tailing her and trying to run her off the road. She swears she wasn't 'lipstick girl'.

All the making of a bad client, so I fire him as client and kept all the work product until the asshole paid me, which was after I sued him. Ratting him out to the board is what got me paid.

Do not advise this at all. Can turn bad, very, very quickly. One minute you are dealing cards in a casino, the next you got a jacked up roid monster  trying to reach across the table and beat the ever living hell out of you. lol

It would be deserved if I had actually known she was in a relationship, but alas. Roid rage and cheating partners, do not mix.
