Ever taken a pay cut? Why or why not?

I have a job offer for about the same base salary, but the OTE is about 10 to 15 K short of what I currently make.

I like the Director I would be working for, company culture looks awesome, pretty healthy. I actually love it. Benefits are decent, about the same as my current company.
They have no vehicle stipend because they give you a Toyota Highlander completely of no charge, no monthly charge, gas card included, my spouse is allowed to drive it as well as myself 24 seven for personal and business needs at our leisure.

But the OTE is bothering me, it also really doesn't help that I'm in the middle of selling and buying a new house, so I can't afford to make any hasty decisions even if I wanted to so I won't fuck up my bank preapproval for the house loan.
But putting that aside, on a personal level I'm a little bit torn. 10 to 15 K is a lot of money, at least to me. It's fucking with my ego. HARD.

Any tips and feedback will be much appreciated, thanks in advance , team! 💯

I took a 40% pay cut to be happy. 10/10 would do again. The money will come when you're at your best. And your best you is likely a happy you.

Sounds like the vehicle perk would more than make up for the OTE difference in gas, insurance etc.

Yeah. Jumped ship from one agency to another. Base was $15k lower but they had no commission cap. Slayed over there.

It is a cool perk, but in reality, I really don’t give a shit about it. I would be willing to trade in the vehicle to get my money back, we don’t need a third vehicle. So the vehicle perk to me is not a major consideration. Seriously, if they allowed me to tell them to keep the vehicle and I get my OTE matched or improved I would do it in a snap.

Have you tried to negotiate this?

Absolutely, doesn’t seem like they are very negotiable about it. Then again, I haven’t quite declined yet.

On multiple occasions, for either better management, career growth, opportunities, or just bad fucking luck. . No ragrets. If I lived in ragret it would kill me.

I actually did last year. Significant drop in base and OTE, but I didn't enjoy the sale (I prefer revenue generation over cost reduction value props). Convinced myself I was talented enough to make up the difference.

Now I'm in a weird spot where I've been promised they'd create a role to match my skill set (and pay) in 2022 and actively interviewing. I'm going to hit the OTE they promised, but not the one I told myself I could do.

I dont know if this helps you, but it frustrated me thinking about the whole situation 🤣

Why are you considering this change? If it’s because you are really unhappy in your current role, is that 10-15k worth your happiness? Or is your ego more important to you?

The future of my company has been put in question. Out of my control political shit. We’ve lost a good chunk of people, so on top of everything else, there’s a lot of responsibility put on my back, granted it also has potential for more commission earnings but the questionable future aspect is what makes this hard to get reinvested in. Money is good and about to get better in a way. But, I feel like at any moment it’s going to explode, and no more company, job, money etc. I really don’t want to be doing a (serious) job search when the shit hits the fan, if that makes sense… Besides that it hasn’t been a bad gig. My boss whom I respected pretty hard also quit. So it’s been pretty fucking demoralizing. The left over team respects me and are also good peeps but yeah… that’s the reason for the “WHY” am I interviewing …

I did to break into an industry I wanted to be in. After a year I was promoted and compensated very well.

What’s the total OTE? But as SaaSam said, the vehicle perk probably makes up the difference.

You need to evaluate the total compensation package - sometimes 10-15k less in salary is not as good as better insurance, vehicle, PTO, ETC.

I declined. Mortgage and kids to deal with. Fuck that. Also, my company just doubled my commission to make up for some folks we lost. Flying to LA Monday for a meeting to discuss the future of the business in addition to a base salary raise on top of the combined commission I just received. Gonna ride this out since I’m also in the middle of selling and buying a house , so no charges until the deal is completed and keys are in hand. Thank you all for the tips and advice ! 💯

You have to do what’s best for you and your family in the end. Stick it out for a bit then take those skills you learned in the future for other opportunities as they will open back up again.
