Executive Composition as a determinant of company quality and propensity for success

From what you've seen, are executive hires highly correlated to company success?

Eg:
Startup A hires Atlassian's VP of Marketing, and a number of other leading tech VPs executives (Okta, Datadog, etc)
Startup B hires leaders from smaller companies

Do you place a heavy weighting on Company A given the experience of their leadership? or is it a smokescreen and those folks are just trying to cash in on potential IPO

How else do you look at a company?

I mean...leadership with a track record of success are going to be more valuable than unproven unknowns, isn't that a fairly obvious question?

I wouldn't join a company only because the leadership was impressive, but if it was close between two places I'd pick the place with notable leadership over non.

As someone with only a few years of experience, it seems like a good idea to challenge my 'obvious' conclusions with input from others.

High-performing companies usually attract high-performing employees.

Is hiring someone who has taken a company from start=up to IPO a guaranteed success? No. But I'd argue someone who has done it before has a higher likelihood of doing it again.

Seasoned execs helps, but it's not the only thing.

It depends on who they took. I worked at one of those companies listed, and some of the leadership was horrendous.

Company A has a high propensity for executive circle jerks and clashing personalities, leading to the downfall of what the founder(s) original vision was.

This is a really interesting point. Thank you for sharing. In that case, looking for leadership teams with a 'founding majority' would be preferable, right? Where is the tipping point?

I don't think coming from a large company makes this more likely. There are jerks at companies large and small.

I think having some proven leadership of other successful companies matters IF THEY WERE THERE FROM THE BEGINNING AND helped it grow.
