Experience in full cycle farming sales but looking on how to break into tech...

Hi folks,

I am a experienced sales professional (6 years) working in the farming industry. My day-to-day responsibilities include traveling to farms and making sure the animals are healthy and properly cared for while I sell my product.

I have been very successful in this career as it is very technical, and requires a lot of trust and good relationships being built with the customers.

I have always been very interested in technology which led me to learn a bit of coding and even developing my on CRM using a low-code platform.

That passion for technology and sales sparked in me a interest in breaking into tech sales.

I recently acquired the tech sales course by Course Careers but coming from a different background there's always that part of me that keeps telling me that I lack experience.

Do you have any feedback on this matter? I will start a poll bellow just out of curiosity to know how many of you came from a different industry.

What was your previous experience before braking into tech?

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I take it the product you currently sell is not tech-related. But there is a whole agricultural technology industry out there. One of the places I would check out is FarmersOnly.com Its a SaaS solution geared toward people in the farming lifestyle. I'm sure that by heavily networking on that site, you'll come across some... oppportunities.

And the naive me thinking this was a auction / job posting site. Smart concept tough. I can only imagine the deals that go on there. Lol

Why not sell tech to the farming industry? AgTech is huge! You could focus on livestock management, crop management, compliance tools, etc.

Corp and even indy farms need tech to compete.

AgTech or NoTech

Problem is, right now, tech sales people canโ€™t get a tech job so the chances of someone with no tech experience are pretty slim (not to discourage you)

Good advice on this thread - sell tech to the same people (category) youโ€™re currently selling to > stick it out > will be easier for you to pivot

That sounds like a good plan. I have business partner on a startup on another country where we are exploring this. However I'd like to get exposed to the tech industry in North America to develop my skills further.

Farms or Tech - a lot of pigs either way. I came from marketing before there was digital. Judge me.

Another vote for AgTech here, I feel like this will be easiest transition and most transferable for your skills.

How involved/scientific was the health check of the animals? Anything you could leverage for something medical?

I would say the health checks would be more geared towards improving management. Although my position is very technical, it is not as if I am performing operations in the field. I've thought about partnering with vet clinics and develop an app to help them better assist their clients. Meanwhile, I'd like to get experience in the filed of tech sales though as there will be no users for such an app if I don't get acquainted to all the tools needed to sell such thing.

Cars transportation industry to tech here. Donโ€™t worry about lack of knowledge. Your job is to sell shit and let others talk the technical details. Just make sure company you join have SE or SA to do demos for you.
