False titles on LI

I see a lot of AEs that call themselves directors or sales leaders on LI, basically bumping their title up one level. Would you do that? What do you think of it? Unethical?

I also see directors/sales managers listing themselves as VP of sales as well.

I reached out to an old colleague who called himself the enterprise director at a prominent company. Somehow, I ran into his colleague and he said "what? Dudes an ae."

Up grading yourself?

Wait, what? I haven't heard of this. I do know that companies often give people inflated titles. But doing it yourself? Weird.

I think a lot of people lie on LI. My example in the OP is some kid identifies himself as Enterprise sales leader at a pretty prominent company. He's actually a commercial rep. Yet I don't think anyone has called him on it.

Yikes. Maybe no one has called him on it because it's so... sad? I don't know. That's pretty shitty.

So he was an old colleague and the place I currently work for sort of partners with him. So, I reached out, we exchanged pleasantries and I asked for his team to meet my team for account alignment. Ghosted. Met a colleague of his two months later and he said "____? Yeah, he's an AE on our corporate team."

Yeah, I can’t see how this would be a good long term strategy. Seems pathetic, to be honest.

I have seen many companies give ICs a VP title. Usually this is based on level of experience or the image the company wants to project.

I’ve seen interns do better than directors and VPs. Who cares !

I’d rather read someone with an over inflated profile title than someone who writes “ass kicker and passionate about process” or something that’s meaningless and annoying.

so i would say that its stupid and to not do it, but ive had ppl I know get that "fake" title and then they are able to land other VP level jobs at other companies and have incredible compensation. so if it works it works!

How do they do though? Do they crash? Actually probably not as most ICs are probably better workers than VPs :D

the ones I know have all done pretty well. I think at the core they are smart and hard working. But if you take someone who is a VP that doesnt actually manage a budget or a team and then put them in an org where they have to do REAL VP shit, they will most likely fail haha

Some companies are labeling individual contributors as direct roles to get them in the door. Keep in mind most hiring teams can sniff it out pretty fast if you lead people or not
