Fat Vs Fit

Ok, genuine question. (actually more genuine than you might think).

So I work for a multi branch kitchen wholesaler, this is a legit situation, and I need to understand wether this is actually a thing; Here's the situtation.

I work in a out-of-london branch, both my neighbouring branches are inside the M25. Region 1 (lets call it region 1 and 2), is repped by a overweight 40-something who hustles pretty hard, takes samples to site, supports on designs, starts early, finishes late etc goes the whole distance (when I first joined last year, I spent time with him and his rapport is decent).

Region 2 is repped by a nice fella in his early / mid 30's who plays football at a semi-pro-ish level and is very in shape, but frankly does the minimum level of activity to get by, and offers basically no support to developers. Rarely hits activity KPI's. However guy 2 is (often) at the same sales level as guy 1. Not always, but mostly, but for genuinley a fraction of the effort.

Here's the question - I really mean this - is appearance that important? Just looking from the outside in, am I better off focussing my energy mainly on appearance, or does hustle win the day? I'm 28, so my instinct is to stay in shape and let the hustle come later, but something tells me this is bullshit. However, if it's the way people are / buy, then so be it.

So give me your headspace in the comments on this one fam.

Appearance doesn’t mean anything. Health is what matters

I wouldn’t say appearance is what matters here- it’s about the fact that Mr. Fit can get the same results with a fraction of the effort because he’s healthier & happier. Physical health plays a lot into mental health and that’s definitely something that those with stressful jobs need to be aware of.

Yes I have definitely thought he looks a lot more 'confident', relaxed if you like.

Guy number 1 could also have a health condition you know nothing about.

We come in all shapes and sizes, and I celebrate that fact. Present yourself clean and professional and all should be well.

I'd be curious to know more about territory size, time in the industry, and if #2 had connections prior. I've seen the same thing shake out and it drove me nuts. I'm more like #2 with exterior health, but always had to hustle like #1 to get it done

#1 looks after Croydon and #2 looks after Bromley / Orpington so very similar territories, pretty much next to each other. Not sure if #2 Had prior connections, but with brand new business it just seems to come together easier.

Obviously stay healthy so you can stick around as long as possible, but with sales in the US I'd say being overweight doesn't really affect your numbers unless you're a colossal fat ass whose weight is just an absolute spectacle and a distraction during the sales process. One of the best reps I know is a bit rubenesque if you will.

Hustle your ass off first and foremost. Health is the key factor to a long life, so even if it makes you seem more "attractive", it's going to pay off down the line as you age.

Who cares if you have a 6 pack when you're selling something. The question is, will you be healthy enough to keep selling long enough to see your career pay off. I don't get why people think looking good is the key to success--being healthy enough to keep doing the things you love is what is going to get you there.

Also, guy number two has a passion/hobby outside of work that likely means more to him than anything guy number one is into. Competing at that high level is going to command more your attention than if you only have work to look forward to.

I think you're focused on the wrong variables. Guy 2 may be doing things behind the scenes you aren't aware of, or he may simply have found a smarter/faster way to do the daily tasks required of him. We celebrate over work, but in reality, people who figure out a better way will outperform. I'd investigate further and find some new variables.

People buy from people. Being healthy (looking healthy) creates more trust.

Also people love dealing with successful people. If you look good, people perceive you as more successful and even more competent.

There could be a lot to understand with this one. At a high level I would say maybe number 2 is more balanced and it helps his success. Number one could be too focused on work and not health outside of working. But as other's have said, there could be other things. Obviously looks do matter, I think people that say it doesn't aren't being honest. But it's not just the 'look' it's the effort it took to get to that point likely translates into other areas of life (for example).

Appearance certainly does matter, not to an extreme IE you don't need to be a physical specimen, but take care of your hair, hygiene, clothes that fit etc.

What would you do? Good culture, product-market fit/tech, growth potential - questionable manager, no equity, low pay
