I like charities centered around animals. The Humane Society, local shelter/rescues or a wild animal  rehabilitation centre are my picks.

Definitely. There are several reputable ones where I live but I've heard horror stories as well. Humane Society is a safe bet, I think in the states the ASPCA is similar.

@funcoupons Great call on the animal related ones.

I've been donating monthly to the Toronto Wildlife Centre for years. They don't get funding in the same way as the Humane Societies and they deal with all sorts of creatures.

One of the biggest factors in success in America is having a two parent home. Foster kids are especially disadvantaged. There are a number of charities that help foster kids go to college (only 5% do) and transition to the adult world as they often lack the support that many of us in the War Room probably had. A lot of this is run through community college charity programs.

Local food banks are amazing, especially in cities as well as low income rural areas. I used to volunteer in my hometown, this is making me want to start again!

Animal charities and PLAN Canada (Because I'm a Girl).

I always qualify the charity pretty thoroughly to understand what percentage of donations actually go towards the cause versus managing/advertising. 

Some of those percentages for the big ones are SHOCKING.

Also try and avoid church affiliated ones (nothing against the church) as I feel like I never quite know the true intention (i.e. helping versus proselytizing and converting)
