Answer it neutrally with an open mind, I know what it's like on the other side so if its useful, i'll listen on.
If not, I'll let em know early.

if they're an absolute prick about it. then it becomes a game.

Have got some great intel as the receiver of cold calls

When it's some random call center calling to sell me insurances I usually hang up pretty fast tbh... however some weeks ago an SDR from a SaaS company directly reached out to me over the phone and I was so surprised and her pitch so good that she even managed to book a meeting with me.

Even though I knew that I was not a buyer of her product, I was happy to speak to a very good sales rep so I let her do her job :)

That’s great to hear! What did you like about her pitch specifically?

She was just convinced by what she was telling me, and I think that makes a huge difference. She took the time before the call also to get to know about me and my job (on LinkedIn basically, but that means she prepared her call).

So nothing really specific but receiving a call of someone nice that knows her stuff instead of a basic cold email was really cool in the end!

Not trying to be a douche here, but if you knew you weren't a buyer of her product, why would you take the meeting?

I feel like I wouldn't want to waste her or her AE's time. Did you take it to give her meeting credit?

Nope, but as a Head of Sales managing a team of SDRs that's always good to perform some competitive watch at some point :)

A VP of Sales who gets angry when people cold call, wild. Does your team cold call?

My team don’t call me because I’m not a good lead for them.  99% of cold calls I get are just working their way down a list, their opening gambit is not to introduce themselves, and come with no research on me or why I’d be a good mark for their product/service/or random crap.  These useless cold callers give pros a bad name and make our job exponentially harder.

Makes sense. What do you do if they have done their research and you are a good fit for their product?

I'm polite to start and it usually stays that way. If it's not something that's gonna happen I let them know early, tell them thanks for the outreach, and sometimes give a compliment or feedback about the call.

It's a cold cold world out there dialing.  If we're all in sales, we've all dialed and smiled with tears dripping down our cheeks.  How can I not be polite and nice to the person calling?

Depends on the tone of voice.  You have 7 seconds to impress, if you sound depressed, dour, moody/arsey then im gonna mess with you or cut you off.  If the caller is friendly, warm and just generally decent, im polite AF, will give info (even if its we dont need rn) or will pass on to the right person.  Its all down to the approach.  Some ppl want to be in sales, some dont.  I am fine taking cold calls cos its the role im in but make me wanna take it because we should all try to be our best selves.

I want to see how good they are, so I let them have a shot. BUT I tell them to forget their scripts and shitty sales manuals if they don't LISTEN to me.

Depends if it's your classic car insurance cold call...always sack those ones off but if it is something a bit different I always give it a listen (If I'm not busy that is).
