For a newly funded startup, if they want to hire a VP of sales/BD person. What things should they consider?

Someone with sales experience in the start-up space. I'd honestly take an SDM who worked at a start-up for a while over a VP of sales who was doing enterprise-level sales. Different beasts

for VP of Sales - it depends on your product. Is there someone who might be able to leverage your product into their current industry?
I also think startup experience is more important on a BD side.
As long as your VP of Sales can build a sales team, which most do no matter what level of company they join, you will be gravy!

There's two main things to consider:
1) how well can the person recruit and hire (diverse) candidates? Or are they just importing their old team over and over?
2) How will they build a world class sales culture that's bigger than just winning? How will they operationalize career growth? How will they approach enablement? Tech stack? How will they approach prospecting? Are they looking to micromanage or empower?
If they have a clear vision and method to tackling these two issues, you're probably hiring a really great sales leader.
