for those in mid-market or enterprise, do you ever go a month without getting any commission?

basically if you have a longer sales cycle (3+ months) do you ever go a month without closing anything/getting any commission?
i myself am in cybersecurity in mid-market with a 3ish month sales cycle, have yet to have this happen (& hoping that continues), but i am wondering what the war rooms experience has been like? hopefully positive as well!

I know a few folks in cyber sec. They usually have fatter fixed components to compensate. Though, not sure if that's the case with you or @braintank

by "fatter fixed components" do you mean higher bases?

Yes. Plenty of places have cyclical sales cycles and there can be busy and off seasons. The market is trying to stabilize and projects are being pushed in certain places. It takes awhile in a role to find the flow.

I'm ENT cyber SaaS and have definitely had consecutive months without commission. Usually when you're just starting out or Q1 if you sweep the floor to max accelerators.

but you’re not just starting out, are? it’s the latter for you?

do the months without commission effect your headspace at all?

I started a new gig about 6 months ago so no commission for a few. Now I'm reaping upsells and new deal cycles are on the cusp of closing.

Some effect on headspace. My base is enough to live off so I'm not too worried financially, more I just hate not being on the top of the leaderboard.

It happens. We get paid the month after the deal closes. Most deals close the last month of the quarter, so you might have a few months where everything pushes, but then you get a chunkier check the month after

Like most others have said, I get paid the month after it closes but a lot of deals wait till the last month of the quarter. Usually there's one or two that will come through at a random time and I'll get a smaller check for those ones. Every once in a while I'll have a blank month but maybe one or 2 months out of the whole year at most.

I am in ENT life science sales and I get paid quarterly. there have been times that I have not recieved a commission check and that is normally Q2. Q1 is normally deals that pushed from the previous year, and in my industry alot of groups will make decisions in Q3, and Q4 are the ones that push from that.

so it is not unheard of to miss a commission check but that normally means the next one will be bigger

(this is assuming you are not ramping which is about 12 months)

I get paid the month after I close something.  Sometimes there is residuals (monthly) but mostly its project based.

happens a lot, especially higher up in enterprise you go and in solution complexity.  as a global rep I went 6-8 months without a commission several times and then closed large contracts in q3/q4.  most are paid (especially SaaS) 1-2 months post sale, so it really depends on how many deals you are doing per Q, your ASP and sales cycle length

important to have financial acumen when handling the financial peaks and calms

We’re paid the month after a deal closes (close in April paid in May) so there will be months where nothing closes and you don’t get a commission check. I’d say more often than not I’m getting some type of commish every month.

Long cycle sales opps tend to have some dry times.  Boom/bust is what I hear about cybersec unless you have a fully built out pipeline and network.

I have in the past. The way my current comp is structured now is I get 20% of my quarter's OTE for the first 2 months then the rest of the payout owed for the quarter in month 3.

I thought it was weird at first, but it is nice to get some consistency to commissions.

I would run into clawback issues if I finished under 40% for the quarter, but that fortunately has not been an issue.

that is interesting, i've never heard of a structure like that.

glad it's working for you!

I work in enterprise sales for manufacturing IoT data collection and analytics.

Our sales cycles usually take multiple months, sometimes years. But when that commission hits, it's worth the wait.

Like many of the other comments, my base pay is higher than most to compensate for the longer pursuits.

Usually can take a while to get going with a new company so try to see those that offer ramps.  Unless you get to walk into an awesome territory that is full of deals.

Absolutely. I'll close about 75% of my quota with 2 deals, so the other months are just the remaining 25%. I've had months where I've only closed $2500 on a $4.2m quota and still hit my yearly number.

No, but sometimes it's so small I barely believe I have one. I get paid the month following product ships, so production delays or shipping rolling to the next month drives me mad.

Midway through the year I switch gears and focus on delivery which always fucks up my start to next year's quarter, but has to be done to reap the wins of the previous 6-12 months.

Thanks, its been crazy but honestly we're getting lots of business from other companies who can't deliver so there's been an upside to our headaches.

How long did it take for you to go from mid-market to enterprise sales?

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
