Founder at a start up - the good, the bad, deez nuts.

90% serious post for sales people looking to join a start up: even with product market fit, it's still really hard. what you should look for is go to market fit, specificity of ideal customers, and medium to huge market to sell to, or as an equal trade off, large deal sizes. i see a lot of articles that sort of imply "2 successful reps is a good barometer" --> to me, if I was not super adventurous, I would not join anything under 5m in revenue with a plan to 10m. to me 5m is the new 1 million. as a suffix to all of this: product market fit is super important and proves the product does have a market, but that is different front actually being able to hit 500k-1M quota repeatably on a team of reps.

PMF gives way to the refinement GTM motion. You can’t force the market to buy from you or how you want them to buy from you, but if you can sell, listen to customers, and ship updated product and process, then you’re in a better place than just PMF alone.

I don’t think people spend enough time thinking through the revenue motion. Customers get cold feet if they notice your team can’t keep up with their buying process. Also, your infosec posture better meet or exceed the needs of your ICP.

nothing can beat PMF! not the best marketing, not the best sales leader not the best founder.

I can see why 2 successful reps would make ppl feel good, but you HAVE to know more than that.

Totally disagree. You can reach PMF and have a total shit go to market motion that leaves you dead in the water. If you focus on finding PMF, but neglect building a revenue machine, then you are going to be in a world of hurt.

this is true, but if you have a great rev machine and no one to buy the product wont you just as F'ed?

I would want to establish PMF and THEN get my revenue team in order.

i understand they go hand in hand to some extent. but if you focus on the revenue engine first, i feel like thats a bit miss guided, no?

Thanks for sharing, I had no idea about the 5m in rev as a key metric when looking at start ups
