Fresh off an interview venting

Just got off an interview with a VP at a place I was really excited to be well into the process with (2nd to last round).
while it wasn't the final presentation/mock call, it did require a good level of prep in that I was told to study their top rep's demo. cool. did as asked.
I over-prepared, I'm all ready, and then ~8min in VP tells me I lack the experience the other canidates have. Didn't test me on the platform, just a few basic questions until he let me know I won't be proceeding.
Bummed but also appreciate he was straightforward. I asked why have I come this far, then?
-I do see lots of their reps have been AEs for 2x as long as me.. taking comfort in that i guess

anyone have a similar experience? My hopes were

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I remember losing a job oppt leading the Microsoft team for the state of CA to the guy who headed Obama’s IT transition team. I didn’t even have a shot but they still flew me into Redmond WA and interviewed me.

You never know why they keep you in the process but every interview is practice for the next one.

That just seems rather abrupt. Sounds like they just didn't like something about you. How did the other interviewers view you up to that point then? Positive feedback?

Yep abrupt is the word. Though part of me wondered how I progressed so far when I’ve been in sales significantly less than their AE team.

Yes, real positive feedback from the other interviewers to the point they gave me tips on nailing the final preso

- They hired someone else already and are a chicken to let you know about that.
- They know you are overqualified and do not have the budget for that
- They are losers.

I don't think the answer to "why would they do this" lies beyond these 3 points.

You did good, don't worry. Maybe just ask for a feedback.

They are looking for an experienced hire, and you have to sell him when he says that. How does having 5 more years of experience selling differ from you? Can you sell him on that?

That really sucks. It sounds like either:
1) he just straight doesn't like you and wanted to end it there
2) he is being truthful and they have more experienced applicants
3) their process is flawed and you should not have made it that far before you first met with him.
4) your experience truly limits you from his expectations.

In the past I've applied to companies who were looking for previous experience in their field and even though I had the skills, I was dead from the start of the call from their sales director completely due to his expectation that people need to have worked in their industry to sell for them.

Sometimes it's not that you've done anything wrong, it's just that the two pieces don't fit together.
Keep at it and learn to improve where you can. This might go a bit better in the future if you look to set expectations as soon as possible and ask to understand their interview process.

Ah that's the worst. I always feel like when they say it's the lack of experience, it's because they already have someone else in mind. Like why interview me if the lack of experience is a blocker when they knew my experience from the start??...

I've for sure seen that feedback after an interview but never during... seems very odd to me. If you took the time to prepare, I think they should at least have given you the respect to go through the platform. Who knows, you probably would've wow'd them with that!

My thoughts too. I was on the verge of asking “what if I kill the preso” but it was cut off before I could get it out..

Yeah, I think the team before didn't know he had something else in mind, hence their enthusiasm. I'm sorry.

Wow really sorry to hear that. That VP must be one of those that years of experience is the only way to the quality of work the candidate can do.

I would assume you messed up earlier in the process, since the manager wouldn’t have you met with VP if there is red flag.

Unfortunately I assume the VP made up their mind just from looking at resumes.

I'm really sorry to hear that, doesn't make sense for the VP to hop on the call if his mind was already made up.

Weird way of saying no. Not sure why they couldn't figure this out in the first couple of interviews. I had this happen to me on the last round but they at least waited until after the interview

Missed op to see you and learn from you imo. Also, the sales leader must think and consider how they sell their office and business to the market.
