From promoted to laid off in 1 month - could use some encouragement

Well I'm part of the tech layoffs going around. Didn't think it would hit me as I just got promoted about 2 months ago but started the new position 1 month ago. Never saw this coming in a million years since I was 2nd place overall on my team. However, I also was the 2nd highest paid so I totally get why they let me go.

Of course they told me it wasn't performance based but it still feels like shit. Trying to let it get to me so hoping I can hear some encouraging stories from fellow savages who have gone through this recently.

This sucks but I know it'll pass.

I am really sorry to hear this and I assume the shock of it is still there. DO NOT lets this affect your self-worth, you are clearly a bad-ass getting promoted and remember you were the highest paid for a reason!

Take some time to heal emotionally. Do your best to take of yourself and use some of this time do something you love.

That's the game plan man - want to do some things I like. Really low that they would lay folks off just before the holidays but gotta keep investors happy ya know?

I am not letting this affect me - honestly I feel kinda relieved since I wasn't exactly happy here. Not miserable but didn't love it by any means. Going to use this time to rest and reflect.

And hopefully find something ASAP. Debating leaving tech tbh.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Only thing I'll add is try to enjoy some down time and really look for a new role that is the right fit - don't just jump to the first thing. While it can be tough to enjoy the free time with that stress hanging over your head, I know I regretted not maximizing my few weeks when this happened to me. All I did was panic and stress myself out, only to have 2 offers to choose from. Things always work out, especially for top performers :)

I'm sorry bb. Apply for jobs with your new title. Your worth is not tied to your ex employer's bad decisions.

Thank you! The huge silver lining is I did realize how much I like being an Account Manager so if nothing else I got that.

The worst part is feeling safe in 2nd place but being told thanks to me making too much I had a target on my back. Oh well - it's the way it goes.

I have fully learned to only care so much.

You have been doing great and you will in the future. Take some time to refresh and start a new book.

It really is not you - they would keep you if they thought they could. I'm sorry. You didn't deserve this.

Layoffs suck. Happened to me a few months ago and it wasn't easy to go through but I came out the other side with a better gig. There's still great jobs out there

That sucks. Especially just before the holidays. Hopefully you get a good severance package.

And it wasn’t your performance - it’s their performance.

I appreciate that. Once the economy tanked so did our business. Figured I would be safe since I was in the top 3 but that wasn’t the case.

Thankfully I have a severance and hopefully I’ll find something ASAP.

I'm sorry - layoffs like this reflect the company, not the producer.

Yeah I’m reminding myself of that! I know it wasn’t me. I did everything I could with what I was given so I can hold my head high.

I’ve been laid off twice and each time my next move was better than my previous one. It sucks in the moment but looking back you’ll likely find it was a good thing that happened.(as crazy as that might sound)

Hi, I am sorry that this happened to you. I would probably give some advice before I get to the encouragement part. I saw a very close friend(s) get laid off recently and we’re completely thrown off their plans. A few things-

1. I hope your severance pay is more than 4 weeks of work.
2. This is not the end of the world. And sometimes, better opportunities enter the forum because of one mishap.
3. Take pride in the fact that you were the second highest paid person in the firm. That also means that you can get a better hike if you work towards it.

Words of encouragement-

- it absolutely feels like shit, yes. But you can at least catch a break now. While you are hunting for another job, take a good break. Come back stronger.
- Layoffs are seldom your performance driven. They are always their lack of planning. More so - poor planning.
