Full time vs Fractional work

Hey Ya'll -

I am currently looking for my next step in my career and I feel as though I am at a crossroads. I have worked with a ton of startups (8 in 4 different countries) and there are rollercoasters that are so far out of my control - it has been a great learning experience!

Now I am working out - do I go full time or do I start up a business as a fractional VP/CRO for companies looking for build-out and/or scale their sales organization.

Would love to hear some of the communities perspectives!

I think this is a question only you can answer...deciding whether to be an entrepreneur or an employee is a huge decision.

Agree @funcoupons - I have dabbled in a bit of both - curious some of the paths others have taken here and their perspective

Have you been a VP or CRO type at one of those start ups? Do you have a standard playbook or model you are prepared to implement with all of your clients and don’t mind if they steal it? Are you prepared to lose stability of a regular paycheck in favor of high billables that may not be paid on time?

I like the stability and benefits that come with a full-time gig, but that's just me.

Do you want to eat 1 shit sandwich all the time or just sample a few at a time but never have to eat the whole thing?

I personally like to be all in on what I am doing. So id eat the whole shit sandwich knowing I can turn it into something great. Id go full time for the next 3 years, make a massive impact and then retire from that IPO money.

I know that for myself it’s difficult to work for multiple companies which all have equal demands (=high) on my time.

This is a good point @Pachacuti - for me it is ensuring you are setting expectations

My initial thought was "is working out really taking you so much time that you need to do part-time work?" and then I re-read it lol.
If you have that much experience then it depends where you want to put your eggs. You can diversify and be fractional, or you can be hands on and balls to the walls with just one company.
I'm just an internet stranger so idk if I can tell you what to do.

can i ask you - what drives you to become a fractional VP/CRO? to me, that means i'll need to go all in on 1 company, learning everything from how they make their product to who shits in the toilets, for x amount of months, then start it all over again at another org.

You can have objective views of what is happening in an organization.  Too many times when you are a full-time employee you get blinded
