Gathering intel from a former champion who is leaving the company

In a situation where a previous prospect / champion, who was involved in a very serious sales cycle (that we lost to our biggest competitor), has left said company and is moving on to a new industry.

I have a good standing relationship with this guy and am looking to send him a congratulations message on LI or via text but I also want to see if I can scrape any departing knowledge from him regarding the integration they chose, if they had any problems, if there is a chance for me to get back in, who to talk to, etc.

Want to be conscious of tone because I do respect this guy and could potentially sell to him again at his new company.

What suggestions do the savages have on this one?

Thanks fam.

I think a LinkedIn Message congratulating them on the role is the right move, leave the convo open ended and if you can strike up a meaningful discussion and that door opens, walk right on through.

Good call. Slow play and if the opportunity presents itself jump on it

I agree that a congratulations message via LI is appropriate.   Ask if there's some time you can catch up soon to see how the new gig is treating him, and see if on a call, you can find out what's happening at the previous company.  I think that kind of intel gathering is best done in person/over the phone when you can hear if it's the right time to ask.

Ya good call on setting up time to talk. Can manage tone better that way too.

Believe me, I understand the burning need to know what's going on at the first company...it's so hard to sit on your hands sometimes!

Hey Mitts, I would try to send a quick LI msg followed by asking an open ended question like "how is the new company treating him" with a smiley or something like that.
