Get busy living or get busy dying. That’s GODDAMN right!

If you didn’t read my title in Morgan Freeman’s voice, get your shit together immediately.

Now with that out of the way, I have a question for my favourite savages.

Before anyone says it, I did use the search bar and there’s about a hundred threads on SALES movies, but shockingly enough, that is not what my question is about today.

So here it is:

Can anyone suggest/recommend any movies that were truly, genuinely, life-changing for them?

And don’t come at me with “I liked Batman because Anne Hathaway wore a leather catsuit” - I liked Batman for the same reason, but I’m asking for real.

Gattaca is one of mine- powerful flick if you haven’t checked it out.

Unsurprisingly, Shawshank Redemption is another, and I am not exaggerating when I say it literally changed my life. I fundamentally reshaped the way I saw the world, because of the message I took away from the movie. I should mention, I had a pretty rough childhood. I watched SR when I was 15, and I was just beginning to get frustrated that life wasn’t going my way, and I felt powerless to change it. Everything and everyone was pushing me around, and I had enough. I started to take a stand because I realized if you have nothing, you have nothing to lose. I watched the movie again probably 6-7x over following year. In it, Brooks said “I’m tired of living in fear” - and I have carried that message with me since the day I first heard it.

So, I politely ask that you don’t make a mockery of my question with your favourite dirty movies and/or the Jackass series. But if anyone has movies titles that have had a tangible impact on their lives (in any major aspect) I’d love to hear them. They don’t just have to be sales related.

I go for escapism in movies, so can't say there's one that's "changed my life". There are movies I adore as works of art and watch repeatedly, but I don't know if that counts.

Not to hijack post but the book Walden was probably the most life changing piece of content I ever consumed. Heck, you're post title is basically the theme of the book. "As if you could kill time without injuring eternity". That's some deep shit!!!

Excited to see what other's have to say!

That’s Thoreau right? You won’t believe it but we were reading some of his other work in Grade 10 English at literally the exact same time I watched Shawshank the first time.  The memories will forever be associated for me.  I’ll check it out!

Correct, Thoreau.

I read the same year in high school English. It's got some long dry stretches, but the themes of self-reliance and transcendentalism stuck with me. Based on what you took away from Shawshank it might resonate!

I'll throw a random movie recommendation in since that was original intent of thread.

I fucking love The Prestige. Great cast, well shot, lots of layers (like all Nolan movies). Did it change my life? No. But I've watched it a dozen times and talked about it for hours with friends. Ruminates on the pursuit of perfection and it's downside, so I suppose it's somewhat related to sales.

Big Fish helped me understand my dad better. He and I don’t have the greatest relationship, and in the movie the father seems focused on his outward appearance and what others think of him, rather than what he does for his family and what the family thinks of him.

Anyway, didn’t totally set me on a new path or anything, but changed the way I see my dad a bit.

One of my favorites is Vanilla Sky. Genuinely a great film IMO with a very poignant underlying message. Would recommend.

Forrest Gump - live simply, give it your best, never give up, no expectations, be generous, be forgiving.

Fight Club - be yourself, get to your rock bottom then build yourself the way you want - fuck societies standards and rules - fuck the system

So I have somewhat of an answer for you.

In 1998 the movie Croupier came out. It stared Clive Owen.

While this is a movie about casinos, and the life of dealers, it gave me a saying that I pretty much live by.

"Hold on tightly, let go lightly"

It's a very enjoyable flick too. So If you want to watch a entertaining movie, that might give you something similar as it has to me, give it a shot.

Man On Fire starring Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning (2004).

The best part of the movie is when the mother handed Denzel her stuffed bear and said “kill ‘em all”

There is a beautiful art to the impact where a man who was “lost” doing special forces in the military was enabled to live again through Pita Ramos. Then they kidnap her and she’s presumed dead.

It shows that the power of love is the most ultimate power in the world. Even the last act of love which is grief.

Lethality is a spectrum. But if you come up with something brilliant that can’t be suppressed or mitigated by others, you’re in pretty good shape. Salespeople definitely know.
