Get company feedback from past employees on Linkedin?

in preparation for a job interview, how okay is it to reach out to former employees on Linkedin and get their views on the prospective employer?

more context: i had a second round with exec team and during the conversation, i presented what i could hope to achieve in terms of order book, in 12 months.

they seem to be interested in a more aggressive growth. i told them i would need to know what their pipeline looks like, how sales happen, etc..

we are having a third discussion on this.

my concern is that their targets/quotas might be unrealistic.

No harm in reaching out. They reach out to your sources, why can't you?

ok so #1 you should ALWAYS TALK TO CURRENT AND FORMER EMPLOYEES! this is a 100% must.

why did you tell them what you want to achieve in year one?

I would suggest asking them what they want YOU to achieve and then you can dive into how they expect you to do it.

i think your concern about having unrealistic targets is totally legit. most companies DO have terrible quotas

You should absolutely do this. How else are you going to get a view of the company from the inside?

Definitely do it. Worth asking. Just take everything with a grain of salt unless there are patterns in responses.

I've done it multiple times. Put your sales skills to work for your job hunting goals. I got good information too - I always push for a phone call after a quick back and forth so they can spill tea without any written record.

What harm would it do to reach out to former employees?

Frankly, they will be the most transparent into their experiences. I'd specifically look for people who had the title you are interviewing for.

I'd ask all those same questions you mentioned in the original post and see where the convo takes you.

Good luck!

Absolutely. That's a great way to get honest feedback. Be to the point and specific about why you're reaching out, and see if people have time to engage.

Always do this - if I see an interesting company, that would actually be my first step in prospecting their existing AEs to see what their company is like and if it looks good, get a warm referral in that way.

I would do that, due diligence is great - but with a little care about what information they choose to give to me. The opinion of the ex-employees might be biased. Might*.

It's a good move. I found out valuable info when I did this in the past

When you have your LinkedIn account set to "open to work" and recruiters reach out all the time do you take the mindset of "I need to sell myself for this role" OR "The recruiter needs to sell the role to myself?"
