Getting a raise?

Hi all!

Part1: How does a raise work in sales?

Does the raise apply to the Base, Variable, or OTE?

Part 2: If your manager tells you, that you will be getting a raise at the new fiscal year (you didn't request a raise), how do you say that you should be getting more?

Thanks!

1 - Depends on the company. In some companies a raise is only to base, some it could be better commission structure, or it could be a mix of both.

2 - You need to make a compelling argument as to why you deserve more. Sell yourself. Schedule a meeting with your manager and be prepared to back up your argument with hard numbers.ย

Anything on base works the trick well for you
Keeps motivation upbeat.ย

Unsure on your managers part, better to get honest feedback and infact clarity

1) A raise is most often in the form of your base. If it's not, then nope out of that company real quick. A raise in my variable and non-guaranteed compensation is the same as giving me more options to one day buy...it doesn't help me today.
2) Negotiate based on your value, benchmarked against the market.

I would start by showing your value. If you have proved that you have brought in X amount for the company or some good brands, then it's easier to justify.

Ask for an increase in base, that's more secure than adjusting the variable component. In theory a company could offer you any of the above. To ask for more you would need to understand first what number they are offering and see how they came up with that, then present your case why you came up with a higher number.ย

1) Historically my raises have been applied to total OTE.

2) Ask for more, back it up with hard data (stats about your own success and comparable offers).

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
1) Raises to just OTE are welcome but usually bullshit. Usually you should expect to see equal lift on base and variable.

2) First, you need to make sure you're advocating for your own raises! Second, this depends a lot with tenure at company and in sales, role, attainment, etc.
