Getting promoted, need comp negotiation help

I’m in the process of negotiating salary/comp for a sales manager role (coming from SAE role internally) and I don’t know what to ask for. We sell to SMB, I’d have 5-10 direct reports to start and perhaps more later on, and I’d have Senior and junior AE’s to handle. I don’t know exactly what quota looks like for the team yet and I’d be hiring, training, supporting everything start to finish and I report to VP sales. We’re a small company too <100 employees. I’d love to know what the folks think!

Where are you at today in compensation? You can comfortably ask for +20-30% over that. Also, do you get an override on your team's sales, etc.? Mngt comp can become very complicated.

Is there anybody else in a comparable role at your company with whom you can discuss?

No, first sales manager. All of us AEs still report directly to VP sales

Well, that was an idea. :)

Ok, well, I think Pachacuti has a good point. You definitely want to earn more than you do now, and that seems to be a good starting point. I suspect you're going to mirror your VP Sales in how the comp is structured, but not making as much.

That said, are you comfortable managing your former peers? That can be a challenge in and of itself.

And before I forget, congratulations on the promotion.

What is the quota for the reps? What is their base and OTE?

Reps sell $4k MRR on a monthly quota. It’s SaaS. They get $65k base and OTE is like $150k+
