Getting to my next level

Been a BDR for almost two years, worked in aftersales at previous company for a year and a half and previously at a fintech same timeframe. I work in cybersecurity BDR role now and I've been burnt out, mass cold calling and emailing are fine by me but I feel I'll have more success if I have total ownership of the process.
Conversation about a new account executive is off the table cause no one is hitting their numbers, sometimes it feels we're more likely to get laid off than promoted. Generally I'm happy I have this job but I yearn for more.
Savages how hard will it be to get an account executive role? should I stay in this industry or get any selling experience I can get? I need to take control of my career, I've always wanted to sell. How can I bag an account executive role?

The best way to get the job you want is to apply. Start looking while you are working there. If you are hitting your numbers highlight that in your interview or cover letter you send out. Just go for it.
Also, don't be afraid to get into another industry. You don't have to silo yourself in tech. Get a closing role in another field. You can make the same money.
Side note; if no one is hitting their attainment then there is something wrong at your company.

Nothing wrong with looking for a job elsewhere while you’re employed. Particularly if there’s little to no shot of in-house progression.

It's the only path aside from stagnation.

It won't be an easy go, but it sounds like it's a necessary one.

few things i would do. If you are at a large company look at closing role at smaller companies. look at your competitors
then look outside your industry to find a closing role.
I really think the biggest thing you can do for your career is to get OUT of the BDR role.

I was in the same spot 2 years ago. I would recommend looking for Full Cycle Sales rep position.

If you don’t mind prospecting and cold calling then all you need is to start applying.

If you want to stay in tech then trying going outside your vertical. “Tech” is extremely broad. You can find a million different companies in tech. They don’t have to be Saas. Fintech is a great example.

Do you know any BDRs who left to become AEs externally, network with them, and get them to refer you

There are companies that will hire BDRs into AE roles, typically these are more full-cycle sales roles. You might want to look at Inside Sales roles or even SMB AE roles where the requirement is not as much closing experience.
