Going Back in Time

I have been thinking about this a lot lately because I am starting to now enjoy my new job as much as I thought I would. If you could go back in time to when you were first job searching for the first real job, what would you do differently. Go back to accepting the first offer and walking into the new office on your first day. What had you wish you known or what would you have done differently.

I wish I didn't settle and took more time to find the right company doing what I wanted to do...but bills have to be paid!

I could not agree with this one, especially right after graduating from college and having student loan payments.ย

Honestly, nothing...ย

(Puts on Sales Influencer Hat)ย

I love the grind, the rejection, the failure, the 3 ex wives leaving me because I couldn't get hard without my managers approval. The long nights at the office drinking 7-11 coffee. The collections agents calling non-stop and me answering so I could hit my call numbers for the day. I love the $7 giftcards to coffee shops whose minimum order price is $8.50. I wouldn't change anything...

I wish I had started in sales sooner and not moved to tourism along the way. Lost a couple of years there.ย

Would have gone with my gut and turned down the offer rather than deal with the shit culture I chose to ignore existed.

Taken my time to find the company that had a proper sales enablement and training program for college grads.ย

Stumbled my way through, but it was harder than it had to be.ย

This, but end the first sentence at program. Many companies have poor onboarding and training "programs" and it needs to be addressed.

I wish I had taken more advantage of the sales classes that my university offered, it would have helped me realize what I do and do not enjoy about sales.ย

I wish I would have taken advantage of more information on the sales world when I was looking for something after college. There's so many more factors that go into taking a sales role and I do wish I would have looked into those more.

I wish I would have sold longer. I moved into management pretty quickly but would have probably benefitted from another year of selling.ย

@UrAssIsSaaSย what do you think the ideal amount of time is to be an individual seller?

Idk that there is an ideal amount of time but there is a reason successful companies are looking for 4+ years in role when hiring. There is a lot to be said for hands on sales experience.ย

Skipped the startup stuff and gone right to a company that had enablement, product market fit, inbounds etc.

Personally: got right to paying off my student loans so I could start saving for retirement, a house etc

That is what I did also I accepted the first offer so I could start to pay back loans and save up to move out of my parents home. I also took a job with a smaller startup but thankfully the company was successful.ย

Getting into a startup rather than an established company. Chose wrong company that painted all flowery stories but I must say I learnt what not to do!

I didn't end up in college right after high school and didn't officially get my degree until 31, and I think a lot about what things would've been like if I'd gone the traditional college route instead of doing the Starving Artist thing (was trying to be a writer for many years and was bartending and serving on the side). But I'm in a massive company with tons of growth potential and being an AE in tech is always gonna be serious money...so it all worked out really well I'd say?

If given the chance to go back in time, I will do more research to build up my skill set instead of hustling blindly around in my first sales job.ย

I know I am good at high-energy tasks until about 11 am, so I've prioritized my calendar around that. 8-11 is notifications off, heads down stuff.
