going from bdr to ae at different company?

I'm currently a senior bdr who's been at the company for a year. i dont love the industry im in (its getting hammered with layoffs), and im frustrated with the waiting time i still have ahead of me before im an ae (in a market im not even sure i want to be in).

i believe ten thousand percent in my closing ability and readiness to be an ae. i have some options to interview for ae roles at other saas companies.

part of me thinks i need to hang in there, stick it out, be homegrown and show i can go from bdr to ae at the same company.

at the same time, what is that worth? why would i wait six more months in a dying industry when i could go to a theoretically better company and get closing experience now?

appreciate any thoughts.

this is what I did.

I was an SDR at a company and then realized I didnt want to be with that company long term. instead of pushing through and working at a place I did not like, I left. and found a company that would hire me as an AE now.

"loyalty" means nothing.

being "home grown" is worth nothing.

take care of you and if you get a chance to be an AE, take it.

Interview. See what's offered. You have nothing to lose.

However, what@braintanksaid is not wrong.

Always harder to sell product/solutions that you arenโ€™t passionate about.

If you can convey that you are hungry, coachable, and passionate about to a company you would interview with theres plenty that would take a chance on you: likely with a bit lower of a base though as they would be taking a leap of faith with you and want you to prove your worth.

What everyone else has said here is very good advice. You can start interviewing now and see where it takes you. Sticking out more time in an industry that you're not enamored of and where your livelihood is in jeopardy is not going to benefit you at all. See what's out there and if you can find something better for you!

Do you only dislike your industry cause itโ€™s going through some layoffs? Or is there another reason? Weโ€™re in a semi-recession currently. Perhaps if you stick it out youโ€™ll get the amount of experience you need to make a successful leap elsewhere.
