Going Vegan?

What's your take on going vegan?

I was seriously considering this by looking at some content by PETA and other animal rights institutions.

Although there's less scientific research on people who are complete vegan and if or so they are nutritionally deficient.

I know some vegans are too extreme on their opinions but I wanna take the more practical route. Any thing to share?

I'm not for or against it, people can choose to eat whatever diet that works well for them. That said, it's not for me. I'm doing my best to follow a low carb diet, and most vegan foods (beans, pasta, breads, fruit, many veggies) are packed with carbs.

I hate that the meat/animal product industry is rife with animal abuse, either directly or indirectly but I don't think there's anything wrong with consuming animal products. As a compromise I would ideally like to be able to buy all of my animal products from local, cruelty free farmers.

Low carb Vegan diet does exist but it does burn a whole in the pocket.

Farm grazed meat is the best nutritionally as per the research I read although the fact that we're killing is a lil sensitive to me.

Or maybe I'm just being dramatic lol.

I'm honestly curious as to what you could eat on a low carb vegan diet. I feel limited on low carb eating meat/fish as it is.

The way I look at it is that animals eat other animals all the time in nature, it's just the circle of life. As long as animals are killed in a humane way and given a good quality of life when they're alive, I think it's perfectly fine.

You should check out Vegan Keto diets. That's what it is essentially.

As per the protein intake, you can get away with pea protein since it has almost the same effect as Whey on muscle strength. Soy also but ofc in limited amounts.

Also, below 30g Carbs per day you'll still be in Ketosis so you can also include lots of veggies. But you'll have to give up on Grain.

You're right with the circle of life. Although it's a necessity for those animals to hunt and feed. We have so many choices :)

I just looked at a sample keto meal plan - interesting, I just can't see myself sticking to it. I'm doing keto right now (aim for under 20g of carbs per day) and the only thing that keeps me sane is the ability to eat tasty cheese, bacon, egg dishes etc. I'd probably lose my mind if I had to give all that up for cauliflower and tofu lol.

You're right about choice. I like the idea of having vegetarian meals a few times a week, you don't have to have meat with every meal, that's for sure.

I feel you. When I tried being on Keto, all I loved was Eggs and cheese lol.

It's all about how strong the voice inside our head is.

I'm pretty sure in a few decades, we'll have vegan meat alternatives as good as the real ones and maybe people from 2 generations ahead would be calling us savages because we were the generation who killed animals lol.

Your rationale for going vegan shouldn't be predicated on bullshit propaganda pushed by PETA. That being said, I've heard a vegan lifestyle is healthy and has helped numerous people I know achieve a better life. So yeah, go for it, there's a lot of upside, but don't do so because you were persuaded by PETA.

True.

Orgs like PETA have their place though. Don't think that I or many of those who chose this path would even be aware of what happens behind the scenes.

But surely, being vegan solely on their propaganda is a dumb thing to do.

Sometimes I feel like I should stop giving a shit and do whatever the F.

You will spend considerably more on groceries due to the volume of food you have to consume. My advice, try being vegetarian first. Also, after being vegetarian for a year I went back to eating meat but I only (to the best of my ability) buy from local, organic producers who are verified humane farmers. I can live with myself knowing I'm supporting high quality farming and not factory farms where animals are disregarded.

watch the netflix documentary "Game Changers"

I did it for awhile - I DID feel amazing! But it's super hard to keep up with. I also cannot process legumes well, which is kinda mandatory.

Also - I had incredibly severe bleeding ulcers for awhile (stress + booze) and got extremely anemic and needed to be hospitalized. I went back to eating red meat because I needed it to build back my blood. You can do it with beets and things but I was in a really bad way for months. I'm still not fully recovered.

That being said, my best friend is "pescatarian", but kinda vegan. As she says, just try your best. There are no vegan police. If you eat something not vegan you're not going to die or get in trouble.

It's also a myth that being vegan is more expensive. It just takes more time and you need to meal plan.

PETA is also problematic.

Game Changers I did watch and it is very eye opening for sure. Although there were a few things in it which aren't proven completely but were still mentioned.

Glad that you went back to meat and sticked to what suits your body the best. I read somewhere that the best kinda diet is something that you're used to since childhood.

First off, PETA is probably the most problematic pro-vegan organisation out there, they take their extremism to dangerous lengths, although I believe their intentions began as good, now they are corrupt and just a little TOO out there! But that's that on that.

I'm vegan, and for me, it's for the animals and the environment, I believe that the meat and dairy industries are inhumane and harmful to the world as a whole. That being said, I would never try to force my beliefs on someone else, it's all a personal choice. If anyone wants to know my opinions, wants advice or wants to understand my motives around veganism then I'm more than happy to share, but if not, eat what you want and live your life and I'll do the same!

Are there some educational resources you might wanna share on veganism? Some cookbooks, books, YT channels?

Would love your help.

I'd really recommend the book 'Bosh! How to Live Vegan' it's super informative on the world as a whole and how we can make little changes in our day to day life, whether that be eating vegan once week or going vegan full time, or literally just drinking plant based milk!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/BOSH-How-Live-Vegan-eco-friendly/dp/0008414106/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=bosh+how+to+live+vegan&qid=1624375316&sr=8-1

My favourite vegan cookbook is '15 Minute Vegan' by Katy Beskow, it's packed with some really great recipes that are super unrestrictive, also there's some recipes in there that can help you 'Vegan-ise' your current meat / vegetarian recipes - it's fab! Super easy to follow as well!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/15-Minute-Vegan-modern-cooking/dp/1849499632

In terms of education I'd definitely recommend the following docs; Blackfish, Seaspiracy, Cowspiracy and What The Health. As far as I know, they're all available via Netflix or Amazon Prime

Also, the VeganKind Supermarket is fab for finding alternatives, they also have recipes, blogs and news in the vegan world!  https://www.thevegankindsupermarket.com/

I hope this helps!! :)

Some of the things that PETA decries in regards to the food industry is valid; factory livestock typically have a poor QOL and seeing them mistreated pisses me off like none other (Grew up on a farm with livestock). That said, do some research into animal products where they openly advertise good living conditions for their animals. The products I've found are more expensive, but they're better tasting and better quality IMHO. Plus, I can rest at night knowing that I've done all I've could to support businesses that give these animals as close to a normal life as possible.

tl;dr: Don't buy meat from shit head companies if you're going Vegan because of PETA. There are ethical companies out there.

Farm Fed meat is the best that we can do, in terms of making sure that we're having the healthiest form of meat possible and also to give those animals a great life.

Real challenge is definitely identifying genuine brands though.

I went full vegan for a few months last year to see what would happen...and I ended up having to increase my food volume a ton to feel full. Then I found out my body cannot process beans all that well, which is the main source of vegan proteins, so I ultimately fell off the bandwagon and went back to a pretty veggie-heavy diet. Meat 1-2 times a week, seafood 1 time a week, but lots of veggies otherwise.

It still sounds like a very healthy diet, regardless of you being a vegan..so more power to you!

The best protein sources are pea protein and soy for vegans. Beans are lil carb heavy.

A vegan lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle if your body can handle it. It’s also expensive and your constantly getting fresh veggies and fruit. I could never do it but the friends I have that do it say they feel amazing all the time. Might just be them pushing their lifestyle but I wouldn’t change based on a narrative that’s it’s bad. Those animals are bred to be food. They’d never be alive if it wasn’t for the food industry.

"Animals being bred to be food." That statement in itself is so scary.

Why would you eat something that's being raised unhealthily?

Even a Lion and other carnivores prefer hunting healthy animals. I don't have a problem with meat on ethical grounds cuz I understand the circle of life.

But I just can't eat meat which isn't farm fed.

When I say bred to be food I mean the reason that someone is raising them is with the intention of turning them into food. Doesn’t mean they’re being genetically modified. I’m saying that without the demand the animals wouldn’t be bred.

I am a vegetarian turned meat eater turned eggetarian lol. I was vegetarian since I was a kid and I only turned a meat eater because of the circle of life.

Science says that eating unhealthy meat is vv bad. And guess what, until meat is farm fed, it's is mostly being injected with various other things and that's why I left it.

Do it but don't become a vegan snob! I am vegan 24/7 at the house but if I go to a restaurant, wedding, event, etc... I have no problem eating and enjoying non-vegan options. I'd say 85% of my diet has been vegan this year and it's been amazing.

I've been a vegetarian for 6 years now, and my best advice before you do anything is to read a book called Eat for your Type, which will give you in detail which diet would best suit you due to your blood type, and the research to back it.

After that go about it as it you feel. Also, a plant-based diet is just as good. I mean for me the biggest problem is deforestation and the unnecessary factory-style livestock farms that are simply ridiculous now. In Colombia, which is where I live, eating meat also indirectly finances criminal organizations like guerrillas and paramilitaries who practically burn and slash the amazon rain forrest. So there's that on top of all that.  So idk, for me it's just a way for me to talk about the real problem, not so much about animal cruelty. If I could hunt, I would.

If you want to learn how some athletes go about plant-based diets watch Game Changers.

I wouldn't do it. I know a woman in her 30s whose mom was a vegan and raised her vegan. Now this woman has 3 vegan kids of her own and her health is going down the toilet. The 3rd generation vegans have health problems like enamel hypoplasia and an eye pupil that doesn't stop dilating.
They have always eaten super healthy, everything from scratch and they take all kinds of whole food supplements - they're not the Oreo and Taco Bell bean burrito kind of vegans.
Anyway, the woman decided to add a bit of meat back to her and her kids' diets and things are improving.

Vegetarian and vegan diets dont come without animal deaths. In fact one could argue more animals are killed as a result of clearing land and managing rodents to keep them away from crops. At the end of the day you won't avoid "blood on your hands". You want the most humane diet? Take up hunting. Hunters are the largest contributors to conservation efforts than any other group. The meat is guaranteed hormon and antibiotic free. You appreciate the value of the meal more. Its cheaper. The list for the benefits is virtually endless.

I think it is a very personal decision. I went vegan for a year and did feel better overall and felt that I had more energy and was more like myself. I did not find it that hard to do but did miss eating a variety of food because I found myself eating the same thing each day. I now eat eggs, fish, and chicken. You can always try it and see how it goes for you.

I just found out that vegan day just happened, it was on November 1. Veganism was born as an expression of respect for life and the rights of animals, but today the collateral effects of this philosophy have an unsuspected scope, since not using animals benefits our planet, animals and people. All the benefits generated by this philosophy and lifestyle is what is making veganism grow in an impressive and irreversible way. Every day there are more vegans and people in transition towards it. Would you like to be vegan?

I am vegan and its the best decision I made! I did it for the planet, the animals, and slightly for my health lol. The meat and dairy industry is filled with animal abuse and lets not forget the amount of methane and CO2 that is put out, as well as the land degradation and water use!!! Other vegans that bully people into that lifestyle or bully people for not having that lifestyle is not the way to go. If you feel so inclined to go vegan, do it! Just ease your way into it and take baby steps. There are so many vegan snacks and foods out there, and restaurants have bene getting better and better with their options which in turns makes it easier to try this lifestyle!! Def check out seaspiracy and rotten on netflix!

My other half is veggie and a fair few of her mates are veggie/vegan - they don't really find it difficult at all. We know some people that have to be vegan due to medical reasons e.g Lactose intolerant as well as veggie and they cook up dishes which are as tasty as a meat one.

BUT I do think eating more plant-based meals is important, ethically, for health, for the environment, etc.

We eat meat about twice a week and the rest of our meals are plant-based. If you're into the meal box thing, I highly recommend Purple Carrot. Vegan meals that are easy and delicious.
