Good Idea/Bad Idea: Is it okay to ask your manager if they plan on leaving the company?

If your manager has been disengaged, canceling team meetings, not responding to questions, saying I'll call you back but never does, is it appropriate to ask them WTF is going on?

It feels like a significant other acting distant to eventually drop the bomb and dump my ass.

This is an honest question! Thanks for the help.

Definitely. Maybe not word it as "are you heading out", but ask their thoughts on where the company is going/how the team is performing, and that will probably give you a pretty good idea of where their head is at

^Good managers know how to dodge revealing questions, especially if they're planning an exit. I'd second @januszgzre's advice on rephrasing. Put the discovery muscles to use and try to uncover areas of frustration, what your manager's goals are, places you can help, etc. That will be more informative anyway than a yes/no on if they're leaving.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Are you close with said manager? Was your manager previously doing this or is this new behavior?

I would advise against it unless you are very close (as in good friends close) if not it can become uncomfortable and awkward which isn’t the best scenario specially if he’s not leaving.

You can do this very subtle. Ask about his career plans, his view on the company, what his biggest challenges are, …

Previous company is losing salespeople left and right, think I made a great decision leaving. Anyone else have a similar experience?
