Goodbye Posts on LinkedIn?

I personally don't see the point of publically high-fiving your former coworkers in a post where you're clearly bragging to your entire network about your new job. As a manager, I'd have a VERY hard time not posting something snarky in response to their farewell and "well-wishes".

Thoughts?

Would you write a goodbye?

I see LI as a "career scrapbook" in part; a place to look back on where you and others came from. Yes these posts are performative and showy, but that's the nature of professional life, and your extended network does want to know the "why" behind a change.

I don't support lying, exaggerating, and brown-nosing, but I think a genuine expression of gratitude (while letting your network know the latest on you) is a fine thing.

I've seen a lot and I have such mixed emotions. I can understand wanting to leave on good terms but it just seems so cringe 99.9% of the time

For sure--I've never seen one where I've said to myself "wow, that was very touching".

100% correct. If you actually give a shit about these people, tagging them at the end of a post about you is a weird way to show it.

Lame and performatory.

It's fine to say "I've accepted a new position at Company and want to thank all my great co workers at Old Company" but writing a personalized letter... Nah man. Talk to your old co workers directly and thank them, we all have email and cell phones. Nobody else cares.

100% agreed on saying your thank-yous directly. I don't need you to post about how you loved working with me--tell me via a call and let's leave it there.

I'd like to see more of this except substitute it with "here's everyone that I've hated at my old company". Would make LinkedIn a better place.

I did this after I left my old position but more as an announcement to my network that I was looking for a new role. Hated the last one so it wasn't a very long or heartfelt post.

Then you have not committed the egregious crime I have outlined in my post. You've used the platform for the proper means!

May be the effort to put such a post is for the team
Reality though turns out other way. Afterall, there's a reason to leave and you gotta leave. For Me, it's more of mixed. Yet I don't post

I don't care that you left your job and neither does anybody else. Email people directly if you want to thank them.

Goodbye's like this don't come off genuine.  Feels like a performance. . . "oh, I love you guys so much, but okay bye, and maybe like this post and let's have it go viral please because me."

(context: I started a new job in Jan after 7+ years... and DIDN'T write one of these posts, but did think about it)

I seem to be in the minority with this take, but I don't hate them.

If you're disinterested, just keep scrolling (I often do).  But if you stay somewhere long enough, there are probably plenty of people who helped impact your path/direction/trajectory, some of whom are gone from your employer and LI may be the best way to reach them.

Plenty of folks appreciate the shout-outs ... and it's never a bad thing to re-open a conversation with someone who helped you along the way.  Who knows when you might need them again, or they might need you?

Just my $0.02.

Different form of virtue signaling in my opinion.  It feels very self serving, although I'm sure some come from a place of gratefulness.  I also feel like some of this comes from America engraining in us that we should be loyal to companies, even though most companies would cut dead weight if it meant more profit.

I actually don't hate it... I see it as a way of controlling the narrative of why you left Job A for Job B. Especially if it's a move to a competitor, it's important to be in control of that narrative before a past colleague tries to undermine any of your hard-fought relationships that you hope to transition. Once your noncompete is complete, of course ;)

If the client liked you when they signed at Company A, they'll like you when you leave for Company B. If you're preempting slander then it's probably good that you have left 😅

@poweredbycaffeine I can't stop thinking about this! I am so weirded out that you've never had this experience. I once had a GREAT customer who loved me, moved to my new job at a competitor and heard a few months later this client was talking ish on me to the rep at my new place of business. Come to find out- old company told customer that their equipment had to get repo'd because of something *I* did, not because their AR team didn't put in the effort to collect before the leasing company came a-callin'.

Most recent job I left (12 months ago) has told at least 1 influential business that I did paperwork incorrectly and they've had to fix it. (spoiler alert, I didn't do my paperwork incorrectly, proven by my old customer and their copies of the agreements. I had to coach my old client through how to play the politics and get what they needed done)

Damn! Either I'm not good enough for people to care where I go, or software companies are inherently too polite to talk ish on me. Either way, that does sound wildly shitty/stressful!
