Got Fired Before My Notice Date

My CEO (direct boss, small company) asked me to voluntarily resign earlier than my notice date (I gave the customary 2 weeks). I'm not going to a competitor and I'm still doing my job, so I told him I'm available until my last day, and if he wants me gone sooner he can terminate me. He's the sole reason I'm quitting, he is impossible to work for.

Him: "Why do you have to make this contentious? This is standard practice in sales." lololol

So now I'm waiting on his written notice of termination of employment.

1) This is a new one for me (3 prior resignations from sales roles), but have any of you Savages ever been asked to quit earlier than your notice?

2) How do I best warn others to stay away from this guy?

3) What should I do with my extra week off? (My votes are 'honey-do list' and 'apply for unemployment to fuck with him')

It's normal for companies to cut sales reps loose but pay them for the two week period. It sounds like he didn't offer that?

Yeah, he is 100% trying to just not pay me for my full notice period. It's okay if he wants to play it that way, but I'm not resigning earlier, he has to fire my ass. And I'm willing to put in work next week - hell, I was covering for him on a call he flaked not even 30min before our conversation.

Then let him pay your unemployment. 😏

This exact same thing happened to me but, worse. It really pissed me off bc it jipped me out of 5k.
Me to the CEO, verbally, "Hey I have received a different opportunity. Thank you for allowing me to work here for 3.5 years."

CEO: "Please reconsider. I will send you a docu-sign offer letter for a more senior compensation structure but I think you should really stay."

Me: "ehh ok. But do know that this is my verbal notice"
Then I submit my email to document my two weeks.

I get the docu-sign notification at 7:45PM and I take a look at it. Not worth it, didn't sign it.

I get a call the next day from the CEO: "Actually Legacy Sales, I have had some time to think about this too, and could you off load all of your demos/ calendar invites to your colleague, XYZ?"
"Yes will do"
"Great, so I think then today's just going to be your last day. Please turn in your laptop ASAP."
In hindsight, there was a colleague of mine that left this place on a SATURDAY. Turns out he was in training for another competitor for his first week; and the CEO didn't know.
I wish I did that...

You have rights. You've now been fired without cause by moving the date up without pay. Employment lawyer salivating. Call one of those legal help lines for your free 10/15 minute call. A nice demand letter to the company would be a great "eff you" to the shitty boss

Up here we have to give 2 weeks notice, and they have to do the same. A lot people in sales get walked out but they still have to get paid.

I feel like it is somewhat becoming normal. Especially if you have a manager that's has knowledgeable of your current deals. I had a great relationship with my former boss and she said its my last day but will be paid out the remaining 2 weeks. Reps just have access to so much in the CRM to screw a company.

However, seems like this CEO was not the best. If you want to warn people, I would say glassdoor is the best place the talk about your issues.

Take advantage of the two weeks offs, I always recommend knocking out the honey-do list and pick up a hobby you enjoy you were previously to busy to do.

If I may, I'd recommend the bourbon after the rewiring and anything involving a ladder.

He wants you to quit for personal reasons and so he doesn't have to potentially pay Unemployment. If you quit, he doesn't have to pay it (assuming you aren't immediately going into another job).

I have said it before though - when you give notice you need to be ready to leave that job forever right then and there.

Oh yeah, I had a new gig lined up already (50% base raise, C-suite I've worked with previously)

Then don't quit. Just ride out the 2 weeks and get paid for it.

While it's common to release a rep immediately when they give notice, companies need to pay up, or terminate you.

Either way, you get paid. Don't voluntarily resign - you already did that when you gave notice.

Echoing what everyone else said, F' that guy and don't sign anything. Make him fire you and don't voluntarily resign early. That just allows him to not face any repercussions of being a douche.

If it's prior to your notice day, you're well prepared to leave anyway I assume. That's fine, go for a vacation. But I am just hoping they would be paying you in full nevertheless.

This happened to a friend of mine. She resigned, and was told immediately after to get her stuff and was escorted out of the building. You can apply for unemployment and also have some rest and relax days. After all, you will start working shortly so make the most out of this time. Here's to a formidable Q4!

Something similar happened to me recently. Be assured that the best is yet to be. With that type of behavior, that’s definitely not the company you should be working for.

Definitely apply for unemployment. CEOs like this shouldn't be CEOs. Write reviews everywhere you can warning people to stay away. Glassdoor and repvue are very effective in this way.

Standard practice is to cut one loose once they give notice, but continue to pay them through the 2-week period. It's not standard practice to pressure a salesperson into voluntarily resigning earlier. He sounds like a real peach...no wonder you're bailing.

Yep, the whole GTM team will be gone by the new year (for real, we stay in touch). He's managed to implode his company with this kind of petty bullshit and I'm enjoying every minute of it.
