Groveling BDR

My BDR flat out told me what his base salary is today while begging for me to qualify some junk deals for him. It was uncomfortable....

Truth be told, I feel for him, however I'd have a lot more empathy if it was more evident that he was putting in the work that's expected of a BDR. Everyone knows that's a tough gig, and you have to grind your ass off, but I think it was pretty lame of him to put me in that awkward position of literally telling me how much money he makes.

yeah that is not cool. to me that is a sign of someone who is desperate and not super professional.

that person took the job knowing what the salary was, its for sure not something they should be putting on YOU.

yikes.

Not to mention I have zero control over what he's paid. I had to tell him that's a convo he needs to be having with his manager, not me.

Kid was probably lied to about how much the he'd make like 90% of the rest of us here.

when you say "lied to", do you mean misled on how attainable it is?

Yes- edited for more accuracy. Im curious are you the only AE he works with or is he paired with a couple? I was a BDR for 2 years in a past life. I was paired with 3. I prospected a hell of a lot harder for the AE who was more liberal with his qualifications than the other ones. Was a very mutually beneficial relationship for both of us. He made P club, I made more money, and eventually got promoted - a lot becuase of that relationship. That was 5 years ago and we still keep in touch now because he was so much cooler than the other AEs I worked with.
Im not saying qualify every trash he asks for, but if its on the bubble, you get a chance to help someone out. Might want to consider taking it.

No he works with 1 other AE, but that AE feels the same way as I do about him. Sounds like you busted your ass to help yours out, and he took care of you because you took care of him. That's always how it's been with me and other solid BDRs in the past. Sort of a "you scratch my back if I scratch yours" kinda thing. Unfortunately, I've been doing all the scratching for the last year and my back remains pretty itchy. There's got to come a time when he's not sitting back and depending on handouts to make his number. There's got to be some work put in for me to want to throw him some bones. I've provided coaching, I meet with him regularly, I give him target accounts to hit, all of the above, but he's just not producing. As a result, there's not much of a case to be made for "taking care of him". At the end of the day, this is a business and we're (supposed to be) paid on performance. I can't keep rewarding mediocrity, not if I want to see any kind of improvement from him.

Fuck these kids, man.

My first BDR gig took two years to close a sourced deal. I got paid on closed business not qualified ops.

Work your ass of now so you have the grit to survive later.

As tough as it is, that's honestly the best and only way BDRs should be comped IMO

Eh, I'm not so sure. Unless they're a part of the deals after setting the initial meeting, why is it their fault that the AE couldn't close?
If your job is setting meetings, that should be your incentive.

True empathy is saying No. No allows him to develop and get good at prospecting. Iโ€™ve worked at companies where the BDRs were treated much better than the AEs and were able to shove junk through to the point where AEs pre-calling (to potentially DQ) wasnโ€™t allowed.

Yeah luckily we're not at that point (yet) here, and sales leadership doesn't have an appetite for handouts.

i'd let the BDR know i'm going to make $0 in commission from the junk deals, and go back to hit the phones.

I'd raise it in a hypothetical way w/ your manager and push mgmt to reevaluate comp or base salary. It's not great to be in a position where the person doesn't make enough to live on, but it really shouldn't be your problem
