Has anyone else had this experience? meeting the person who gave you a chance.

So I had lunch the other day with the guy who gave me my first real job out of college. Its been a few years since I saw him last

This guy hired me as a college grad into financial services,(when he really should not have) taught me everything about sales for that industry, helped me become fairly good at it, promoted me to a manager when he got promoted to a leadership role.

I was SO loyal to this guy.

When I left that company it was super hard because I felt like I was letting my dad down or something

Weird right?

Well I was able to have lunch with him.

Just a really cool moment to thank a guy who gave me experience that launched my career.

anyone else have a boss like that or the ability to thank someone that gave them a big break?

Well, the person who gave me that chance is no longer around, so my message to the rest of you is to take the advantage of extending thanks BEFORE it's too late.

I did get to send her a message before she passed. Her husband read it to her. It may have meant more to him than to her, but that's good too.

Don't let me bring you down, but remember life is short, and telling someone what they've done for you matters is a really, really good thing to do.

It was very intense. She died in 2020, not of Covid. That group/cohort actually lost three key people that year (none of them to Covid) and it was a huge reminder to make sure that you let people know what they meant (or mean) to you. Letting them know the positive effect they've had on your life is really powerful. Sharing gratitude is important.

It was a tough year for our group, that's for sure. On top of everything else. Life is SHORT! The reminder is to not put things off, particularly if they can help someone else.

Wasn't the exact person that brought me into the sales world but became a mentor to me soon after entering into sales. Even though we are now with different companies we still keep in touch and my travel has had me run into them a few different times and always great to catch up.

Yeah, this happened with me at my last job. It was my first real sales job as I worked in the restaurant industry for about 15 years before that.

He took a chance and brought me in and trained me over 3.5 years. It was tough to tell him that I was putting in my 2 weeks and then on the last day was all fun, jokes, Christmas celebration, and then reality hit when I said bye. It was tough, but we definitely stay in touch.

That's great you could have that moment! The man who gave me a chance isn't someone I'd want to have lunch with, but I am still thankful for the path he set me on.

He was my sales manager... we were close... he was in my wedding! He was being promoted and wanted me to take his role. Unfortunately, I did not believe in the vision of the company and chose to leave and start my own. I had a two year non compete which was honored, however, he severed ties. As an aside... that company is now a shell of what is was... sad after 110 yrs of success.

My first role after college was full of amazing people who became great friends. I ended up leaving b/c pay was not competitive and it was a 100% grind.

I have met up with my previous manager multiple times. Its always a weird feeling since she was a great boss but I know my current position is better.

I have even gone to a couple HH with the entire office. This i dont recommend b/c there will be someone after their 3 drink asking if I will come back.

Great stuff!
Always find a mentor, whether it is your local ScoreGroup, a boss, and someone in you church or group. Be sure they are honest and respected by others and sometimes they must be replaced as you grow or they turn out different than you though, but some are lifelong. Some work better meeting 30 minutes a month and respect their time.

I have had many perhaps one of the best was a guy I hired him at 77 years old that worked for me till 87. He did accounting but was my moral backboard for my company. Have someone you can ask about your actions and if they are ethical and fair.

good points! two hard things to do:
1. find a mentor
2. find a different mentor as you grow and advance in life.

The person that gave me a chance got Cancer and died shortly after my first child was born.

The person had a similar upbringing that I had - but saw a fire in me. 3x my salary on the spot. Then told me I was too smart to be working there. Their mission was to train me so no one could ever say no to me. No one has - I continue to climb.

I owe that person everything. My family, my career, my self-worth.

I was left some books in their will when they died. Their partner dropped off the books at our house. Gave the kids the biggest squeeze. I'll keep these books forever. The leather-bound books align our past lives; I hope they will continue to serve as a reminder to my kids about how fleeting life is, and how giving someone a chance can make entire worlds change.

I will always look past the resume, take a look at the drive. Talk about video games, past experiences, cool things they've done/do that didn't make it on the "attained 35% of team french fries".

Give someone a chance. <3

damn SADNES5 this is the REALT shit right here. I am so happy that you got to form a relationship like that with another person, and so sad they are no longer here. What a truly special thing to have something of theirs left for you in their will. wow.
i hope i can make an impact like that on someones life some day.
