Have you done a virtual event that didn't suck? Struggling to find a team event that isn't a zoom trainwreck.

We have done plenty of zoom happy hours...ideally no more of those because everyone is over them. Goal is to foster team bonding / connection etc... our team is ~15ppl and everyone is fairly new, so looking to help ppl get to know each other a bit.

15 is big and the happy hours with that many tend to suck. I actually enjoy the virtual lunches once in a while with my smaller team of 5 or so. So you could break that down further. With 15 people, only about 2 people end up talking most of the time

Honestly, I think most people are just burnt out on Zoom as a whole. The happy hours, virtual networking, virtual conferences etc have all been done to death for the last year.ย

I do agree that the smaller the group, the better. Nothing worse than a 20 person Zoom meeting where the conversation is dominated by three people the entire time.ย

If you have an hour to spend, try breaking it down into four 15 minute chunks where people rotate through smaller groups.ย

Why not send your team a virtual giftcard to Starbucks or Dunkin and have a zoom coffee/breakfast together?ย

I HAVE BEEN DYING TO DO THIS - so many bands are doing virtual concerts. Pick a local band. Have them do a set. Then they can stick around for Q&A after with the attendees.

Not sure if that's the best "bonding" idea though haha

There was a virtual wine tasting event that was pretty awesome, but it was for an women's construction association. They had top female sommeliers and featured wines from female owned vinyards around the world. Learned a lot about wine, and the content was perfect for the audience. They sent us two bottles, but the presentation was educational rather than about simply those two bottles specifically.

Mixology classes are apparently quite popular, where they send you the ingredients and everyone makes stuff together.ย

This guy does really fun trivia:
Gary from Let's Go Trivia

We only did ONE virtual team thing and we did our own trivia (and it was kinda better for team building). Everyone submitted two things about themselves to the organizer that are fun/interesting/no one would guess. So the organizer (in this case, our boss) would read the questions and we would have to guess who it was. Helped get to know our colleagues in a fun way.
