Have you ever declined to close a deal because of ethics?

Was working on a deal with a middle eastern company that produces the raw materials for bombs. Doubted if I should actually close the deal (lost it in the end so dilemma solved).

Have you ever declined to close a deal with a shady company? Or did you ever close a deal with a company that you regretted afterwards?

This one time in bandcamp...Β

I was a pharma rep looking for a pharmacy in KY. My GPS kept saying I was at my destination, but I was in the middle of no where.Β

Confused, I pulled over in front of a rolling hill to take another look at my GPS when I felt something looking at me. Slowly turning my head to the right I see a white trailer on top of the rolling hill with a poorly printed Rx sign on the front. When I glanced down the hill I saw 40-50 mini goats.

Needless to say I sped outta there like a bat outta hell. No way in fuck was I gonna walk into some voodoo shit.Β

Nope nopity nope. 🀯

I work with so many shady contractors - kinda goes with the territory (though not every one is like that, but 99%. At least in nyc).

however, when I sold horses - BIG FAT YUP. There were certain people that just weren’t allowed to even touch my animals. Fun (and true) story:

One of the biggest horse dealers in the world is in Holland - Valkensvaard to be precise. So there is a lot of dirty money floating around the horse world, no surprise a decent amount is Russian. Apparently someone with heavy Russian mafia ties bought a horse from this dealer, and claimed the dealer sold him a shitty horse and wanted their money back. Dealer said the horse was fine, they fucked it up, but were more than welcome to exchange it for a different one. Mafia dude said no, I want cash. Dealer said no, exchange only. Mafia dude sent mafia to dealers home and shot it up with machine guns. Dealer paid cash.Β

This dealer refuses to ever patch up all the bullet holes in his house as a reminder to never deal with the Russian mafia again.Β

Never declined to close a deal but have been in a similar situation back when I was an SDR - I was selling to logistics companies and the guy literally told me they moved sketchy stuff for sketchy people. He was interested and wanted the meeting but I told him I needed to check with my management and never called back.

When I was aware my company was filing for bankruptcy I abstained from selling 2 units to NASA. It was a great talking point in future interviews.

Absolutely - several times and I have never regretted it.Β  The largest was with a large medical organization where buyer was demanding kickbacks on the business.Β  It was a large account.Β  I refused. Three months later it hit the news!Β  God is good.
