Have You Ever Disliked A Fellow Salesperson For Being Luckier/ More Successful Than You?

☕️ 🐸 I like to think sales is 50% luck and 50% skill when it comes to succeeding. As humans, it's hard not to get jealous or feel down when you see other people crushing it and you're struggling. Curious if other savages have felt similar emotions and what they have done to remind themselves you shouldn't compare yourself to others. Love to see the dogs eat, but this is a competitive game. if you aren't at least getting a little frustrated when others are having success and you're not, you gotta check your own drive

Yes! I always celebrate the wins of my counterparts and I truly mean it. The pissed off part is directed at myself, not them.

Completely agree with this. Hate seeing teams get to a point where they refuse to acknowledge or praise others because they're that competitive. It's a great way to divide a team and avoid sharing tips and tricks amongst AEs. Always celebrate someone else's win but then reflect on what they're doing that I can steal so I can beat them next month. It's a balancing act.

Meh I think anyone is going to get a bit jealous over certain things...

For example, three years ago in an enterprise sales role, a teammate of mine had two Blue Bird inbound leads that were already prepared to buy our product before we spoke with them. They were not reviewing other solutions. They both hired decision makers who had left partners of ours, and both REQUIRED that their new company buy our product as apart of their agreements to join the respective companies. You couldn't make this up. Both deals were worth more than his annual quota and he closed them both in the same quarter with incredibly quick sales cycles, compared to our average sales cycle length.

But if someone is getting jealous about someone else succeeding when they work harder, I don't agree with that.

I've stopped being jealous like I was when I was younger. It's easy to think 'must be nice' when you see someone with better numbers than you. But if someone is consistantly crushing I tend to be the curious type and try to figure out how. Maybe some of it is luck, well how they hell do they keep finding it?

Anyone who says they've never been envious/frustrated is lying lol. It's normal, especially if you've been having a shitty month. The difference is how you handle it. Seeing someone close a huge deal and thinking "aw man, I wish that was me," but then also thinking "good for them, my turn next" is different than "ugh everyone closes deals but me, I suck, screw them, they're all just lucky."

Handling success well is very important too - nobody likes a braggart. I only dislike one member of my team, and it's because he doesn't know how to win gracefully. He likes to rub it in when he's winning, but I've noticed he doesn't do much to celebrate other teammate's successes. That sort of shit is annoying.

That is the worst, but karma is real and people who pull shit like that end up paying for it usually.

Nah, them making sales doesn't shrink my pie, lets go out there and get it. If anything my competitive nature makes me ramp it up a bit when I see someone else's name at the top of the lists.

There's usually some form of jealousy involved. But that'd only motivate me to work even harder

I’m only jealous if I feel someone doesn’t deserve it. If you’re grinding hard and succeeding, good for you.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen way too many people get handed things then act like it’s their “amazing” skills that got them where they are 🤬

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract

I had this one guy I used to work with who would go around telling the entire fucking office how he scored a qualified meeting with an amazing company and then would call it a day (this was extremely annoying when I was having a shit day cold calling) and I never rooted for him to lose but whenever that meeting would yield zero outcome I couldn't help but get a little joy because of his utter cockiness.

The worst kind of rep. I get being excited about a meeting, but bragging about it is such a bad look.

Sales is Timing, Talent and Territory.

I’ve been on teams where less talented SDR had an awesome territory and contact us leads, while I was an outbound mid-market rep because I had more experience when we were hired.. he got a bunch of layups and a promotion because he was lucky to get an easier market.

did I dislike him? no. But did it piss me off he made more money and got a promotion because of luck. Fuck yea.

I love to see my teammates doing well, don't get me wrong, especially since we are a smaller company looking to grow. But that is also a double edged sword. Being a smaller company, seeing my colleagues do well is amazing, but I also feel like I am constantly being compared to them as well (both in the positive and negative respect). When I am in a slow period, and they are doing well, I feel like there is additional pressure on me. So yes, I love to see them do well, assuming I am doing well also. This may be attributable to my competitiveness as well lol

If people work hard and are pleasant and helpful, I'm super happy for them. If they have easy quotas and good patches/territories then it gets a bit harder.

So, most people I know did not plan on becoming a sales person initially, it just happened. So, curious to know how my fellow warriors here ended up in sales anyway ? The more interesting stories the better..!!
