Have you ever experienced a clawback?

If you have, you know the shock and horror that washes over you when you get that finance email in your inbox. Goes something like thsi:

Dear Shitty Rep,

Your horrendous deal fell through. The angel of a client, that you dragged through the mud, has opted-out of their contract and we let them walk away without recourse. Due to your stupidity, we want back all of the commission we paid you. You must pay it back in the next 90-days by forfiting all future commission earnigns.

Love,

Finance Gods

PS if you quit now we won't be able to get the money back, so quit, idiot.

Anyways, have you ever gone through this?

Ever been dirty with a clawback?

Had one happen last quarter because our product team decided to scrap a project and never turn on the product. I also have a few older customers (sold well before my time) that may churn - and I get hit with churn as well. It's fine. Everything is fine.

It's happened to me once and it was terrible. I don't know if it's common practice to not let AE's know when clients aren't paying until the very last minute but that's what happened with me. I thought everything was glorious until I received the above email. They took the commission out of my next commission cheque.

I was not happy about it and not happy with the client. So I started reaching out to the client and ended up getting my VP involved and we re-closed the deal...so I ended up getting paid again. Which is a great end to the story but a really terrible experience. I wish Finance gave reps a heads up when clients are late on payments so I can start reaching out to them and help collect. I keep a better eye on this now but it's still hard to tell if people are falling behind or not

I think Finance is just the messenger, but we should be shooting the implementation team whether it be CS, AM, Engineering, etc.

Our out clause could be Fort Knox bulletproof, but finance and legal will just let them walk...makes me want to scream.
