Have you ever had experiences with sexist hiring practices?

i want to hear from everyone, especially those who have experienced this or seen it second hand.

i applied for a small business sales role as an SDR at a SaaS company back in Oct 2019.

one of their steps was to interview / mock cold call with one of their AEs (who are all male). all my other colleagues had no issue interviewing with the old AE who's been there forever

Im the only female on the sales team and the first time I interviewed I was rejected. but all the other employees were hired and male.

i eventually got into the company by entering in with another role and transitioning into sales.

all the SDRs who I work with have same or less sales experience than I do.

i don't know if it's a culture fit or what. I love working with men but lately they've been hiring more SDRs.... all men

Im not blaming anyone just wondering if it's the hiring managers preferences or what

Best team wins. My previous team was 60-70% female.

everytime I read these posts it makes me sad that this is a thing.

Not sure about other companies but mine but is always encouraging to hire people that are not white males but if they are the best fit for the position over someone with a diverse background I think they should go with whoever would be a better fit for the company and not based on race or gender.

I’m a decade in and I’ve been rejected for a job once for “you’d feel uncomfortable here I have a team of all men” then formally told I didn’t get the job when I had 6 years of enterprise experience and most recently had been at a similar company as the #1 rep in the country out of 500 reps because I didn’t “have the experience needed” and the guy hired a another guy who had just graduated college. A month later I flew cross country for a final interview with comp range already agreed to up front. They offered me 1/2 of what I had just been making. When I asked why, what changed? Exact quote “you’re single. You don’t have any kids. You can afford to start over and prove you’re worth as much as you claim to be.” They were wrong. I took the 3rd job on the docket for a 60k OTE bump w a $30k base uptick. This industry is disgusting towards women. In this forum tonight alone one man pointed out I was a “lady” because he didn’t like me calling out inaccuracies in his story. Another in a different thread didn’t like what I had to say and replied saying he better “mansplain” to me what was going on. Whatever you do, I beg of you - defend your right to be treated as equal. Don’t put up with this BS. It’s illegal. And you’re part of a protected class. DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT!!!! If it comes to it? SUE. Do not just leave because someone doesn’t give you what you have EARNED!!!!!

We have a mix of men and women (almost 50-50) on our sales team and quite diverse

Difficult to say with the info at hand unfortunately. Entirely possible, but not for certain. . My teams have typically been weighted to more women than men, but I always hired the best available candidate, and the women just seemed to win out. Maybe it was me, maybe it was the industries I’ve been selling, maybe it was just the candidates I had.

While reading this posts pisses me off (because I've seen and had shit like this happen to me and other gals as well), I also like to think that shedding light on this huge issue in sales has also helped my career?

What I mean by that is that there have been a few opportunities now where I was the only female even interviewing and I was offered the job. I look at it almost as a "diversity hire." Kind of like what @sellingsellssold said!

You are worth more than looking at yourself as a diversity hire. I know what you mean, but don’t discredit your worth and value you bring to an organization. It’s not self serving and it leads to feelings of imposter syndrome and not feeling like you can defend yourself when they treat you like a diversity hire and not someone they hired bc of what is almost definitely your talent and worthiness of being hired! 💕

I am honest, I let them know how flattered and uninterested I am in their request. I always leave the door open though, you never know!
