Have you ever spoken to a non sales person about sales? (Role, compensation, day-to-day, etc)


I was talking to a friend in accounting and WOW did they have no idea what sales does, what our day-to-day consists of, and how comp works. I was a little bit shocked because it’s not rocket science.


What’s your best story when talking to a non-sales friend about your role??

I usually tell them I make mad money, sleep in, have fun meetings with clients, take runs during the day, and call it a day at 4pm. They honestly can't believe it as they are stuck at a desk from 8-6 with no breaks or variation in their routine.

Most people have no idea as to what sales entails. Normies think that if you're in sales you must either work at the mall, be a telemarketer, or used car salesman. I don't bother trying to explain what I do to most people.

I’ve encountered the same. Most think everyone is an SDR/BDR and dials all day long. I explain the strategy of enterprise sales and it blows people’s minds lol

My friend use to say I could never cold call (he works in construction). Sure enough, when he got his first job out of college it was in construction cold calling Foreman and now every time we talk he lets me know what a grind it is🤣

When my in laws found out I was in sales, the first thing they said was "I couldn't do that, I couldn't lie to people for money" and then asked me if I was planning to get a real job. 

So typically I just say I'm in sales and leave it at that

I have found that people think sales is very different than what I actually do on a day to day basic. I was talking to my friend they they assumed that as a sales development rep I was traveling on the road and meeting with clients and going out to dinners but instead I sit at a desk and have people hang up on my mid sentence on the phone each day.
