I am currently in a pickle where my boss wants to demote me or put me in a performance plan. I am planning on asking for a severance package instead. How can I negotiate for a sick severance package?

If you're looking at a demotion/PIP you're in the worst possible place to try and negotiate a "sick" severance package.ย
To add Iโve been at the company for 7 years and the pmp is not based on bad performance around quota. Iโm over 100% to plan and they said my attitude and effort is there but they want me in a different role.
This context gives more to go on, and the PIP sounds like utter BS...but if they want to let you go they have to either find a way to write you up 3 times (at least in the US). They may choose to lay you off, but in their eyes strike 1 is refusing the new role, strike 2 is your attitude and strike 3 is failing to meet the requirements of your plan.
What's the harm in taking the other role? If you like the company and have found it to be a place worth sticking around as long as you have then you might still be valuable in that role. However, it gives you an opportunity to look elsewhere and find a new spot.

Good point- I also just found out that the other roles have the same pay which is helpful and gives me an opportunity to look for another role while still having a job.ย
Iโm sorry, but Iโm laughing at the mere thought of someone on my team asking me to pay for them to leave. Nah, Iโm going to PIP you and then fire you if you donโt satisfy the PIP.

Hey I get it- Iโm a manager too and when people ask for severance it is kinda shocking. I think for me the option is possible so Iโm asking for advice on what I could say. Lol idk if that helped or not.

Sorry to let you know but it doesn't sound like you have much on your side to negotiate a severance. If they're willing to offer a severance then take it for sure though.ย
