Help! They are changing my comp and I want to influence their decision

Hey Savages,

SaaS Shop, been here about 9 months. First 6 months they had a base pay, meeting goal and kicker for meetings over goal. Started as two in sales and the other person left a month ago.

Im now the only one setting meetings and now also working our professional service engagement (prior to SaaS) to close. They have told me the goal will be double to take on the work of the person that left and then the kicker work start, weak I know. Also, since my role has changed and I'm now working deals to close, I cant prospect full time. The only details I have of the new plan are expect double results to get paid the same and also know we have to justify your salary for a future Series A raise. Below are the general detail, any advise is welcome, thanks in advance.

  • Current Plan
  • Base $75k
  • Old goal 5 meetings a month, payout over 5 increases
  • Benefits are through my wife
  • Paid out on both the service engagements and eventual SaaS deals I couldn't influence - longish sales cycle of 6-12 months for service and SaaS
  • New Plan
  • Same Base
  • ten meetings a month (their justification was we are spending more on marketing and you are the only rep working leads)
  • Over 10 payout increases per meeting
  • Work 5 Service deals to close a month
  • Payout on Service and SaaS TBD

I found these salary guides online

https://experience.bettsrecruiting.com/e/2021-comp-guide-602420f980272

Possible Ideas

  • ask for more per meeting or keep the goal at 5 meetings
  • ask for more per Service deal
  • ask for more stock
  • ask for more base pay
  • pay me work on the SaaS deals I can not influce but ultimately matter

Are sales paid what they are worth to the company?

More work - More pay

You’re likely awfully important to the company right now and probably have a lot of leverage - use that and show them how good of a sales rep you really are.

Trying to find the right way to demonstrate the value without appearing as a mercenary is the trick. Thanks for the feedback!

I agree - nobody likes a mercenary - at least on paper - so do your thing and make a pitch as to why you deserve a bit more!

Doubling quota with the same pay is wild. If you think the marketing will
improve and you can crush 10/month I would argue for the over quota kicker to increase dramatically. If not, definitely pick something and fight for it

Bro, you have to go at it here like an FBI negotiator (Chris Voss Style...) there is another post here on him and negotiation.

Or just look on the web, I would ask very specific questions (open) and do some accusation audits.  Have a quick read here and search the web, they have lots of article to help:  https://www.blackswanltd.com/home

Use the: It seems like... to get to an answer from them, and only use Why in specific cases, read on it, too long to explain here.

e.g. It seems like you have new targets to achieve and that our team's current performance will not be enough. (then go silent for 10 seconds if needed, the first one to talk looses)

You might even need to add something like this: You will not like what I will say, but I don't feel I am given the right support as the only sales person to achieve what you are asking of me and change the commission structure in a way that is not promoting positivism.

Change the terms and all, but you get the idea.  Hope it helps.

I don't think the answer to this question is binary. The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. But the answer definitely isn't 'Yes, always!' and I think you know that.

Your base is pretty high to be honest. Our base for all sales reps is $40k. Your pay is also dependent on a few things- one major one being where you are located. Were you over attaining to your goal regularly and are they planning on hiring more employees soon?

Yeah, I pushed hard for that when interviewing, startups are not as reliable as established gigs. I'm also getting an East Coast pay rate while living in middle America.

AE’s - Try your best to identify all the ‘key decision makers’ early in the process. You might feel that it’s necessary to wait or to be delicate in how you ask for other people’s involvement – but don’t
