Helping peers with Sales

So at this new gig for three months more in an Account Management role. Did sales for 6+ years from SDR to AE for orgs from Startups to Large Cutthroat Corporation.

At this place I hear the SDRs spray and pray, and they aren't setup for success based on their scripts provided. I've commented to marketing that I'm happy to help them have better conversations which leads to less dials and better results, but get the "you're new here you don't know better" response.

Any ideas that I can do to help these people and this situation? I understand it's not my place, but without help they are going to get frustrated and probably get fired or leave the company.

As someone who has tried to go down that path before, it will take a total cultural and training overhaul.

My advice is to just work with your individual SDRs and don’t open the big can of worms.

Exactly.  Lead by example.  Help the ones who work with you.  Results will help make your case.

I’ve tried to do this same thing and the root of the problem is usually so much bigger than you would think. The best thing you can do, similar to the comment above, is coach the SDR you directly work with, or, if you have the time, reach out to meet 1:1 with a handful of the SDRs to help them with strategy. That’s about all you can do…

Totally agree on this one, help out in smaller ways with reps that want your advice and feedback

Why are you going to marketing for this? They are never the answer.

Second this is going to take a whole sale change in how the company operates. I would just work with your SDR and show them the right way to do things. When they start blowing it out of the water then others will take notice and ask what is working. At that point you might be able to incite change.

Anything more than that you are just wasting your time and energy.

Seems like something you're going to pour a lot of effort into, but at the end of the day, it's not your job.

I get it, just sucks because I didn’t get where I am today without someone showing me the proper way. I can tell they are dying for help, however going with the flow at this point as they don’t know better.

Sometimes it takes time to create a big aha moment. As all suggested, try to work with your SDR first and help him/her succeed. If this works out, I am sure you will lead brother.

A/B test the SDRs on scripts. Data driven results are the only thing Marketing will listen to

It's a tough position to be in, especially because you are so open to helping. So if you are going to take something on like helping the SDR's, you'll have to do it on a smaller scale & maybe help them one by one. I also liked the other comment that mentioned leading by example. You can't go wrong with that

SDRs are painful to deal with usually.  They don't know much and if they aren't provided day to day guidance, they are completely ineffective.  I don't rely on mine for my prospecting at all, nor should you.

I pay it forward as much as I can. I had a bunch of people that gave me either one off or long term feedback/mentorship that shaped my ability as a sales rep. Pay it forward if you can, but definitely better to keep it as real as you can without shaking things up

The AE's who say they don't prospect are the ones that cry for help when one of their deals slips for some reason.

That attitude is toxic regardless of position.
