Here is how I avoid relying on Recruiters

So ive talked about this in a few comments and wanted to elaborate a bit.

I have NEVER landed a job from a recruiter reaching out to me because "they think my experience aligns with an opportunity they currently have open"

I have mainly found opportunities on my own.

Here is my process:

I have a Google Doc named "future companies to work for" and I am updating this every so often, it doesnt matter how much I love my current gig I am always ready to reach out to a specific place if I have too.

I keep my eye open on what companies in spaces I am interested in are doing. Ill connect with leadership on linked in and a few sales ppl. (but not reach out just follow along)

This helps me understand what the market is doing.

If I feel the time is right to make a move I will start reviewing job postings for those companies first, seeing if the hiring manager is listed, understand what they are looking for.

If the hiring manager is listed I ignore the job post and reach out directly to the hiring manager.

(this is most effective with smaller companies)

Then I see who answers my messages and can have more control over what is happening.

curious, what other people are doing???

I agree completely. Do your own DD and prospect like you would a new deal. By the time of your first conversation you already have a story for the question "What interested you in XYZ company?"

Oddly enough, I'm on two final round interviews and have one offer on the table for a new role. The two final round started from Recruiter outreach, the offer on the table started from your method.

I know the sites they post on and how to work the applicant management systems (AMS). You figure that out, almost guaranteed to get a call from submitting a resume.

nice! goal #1 in my mind is to go around the AMS.

But goal #2 is FOR SURE game that system so you can still get a call.

have you made a post on this? if not you should drop some knowledge pretty much everyone would need to learn this.

I’ve been researching companies that I am interested in most of which aren’t even hiring, I’ve emailed my Cv and a detailed covering letter and added some of the staff on LI… nothing has happened yet, I’ve only received views on my LI 😂

I would not send your resume unless someone asks for it.

Also i would forget the cover letter unless a job post asks for it.

on linked in, people will see your experience on your profile. So if you like how you describe your self on your resume make sure its also on your linked in.

i would also suggest that you put in your linked in description that you are looking to break into Saas and what roles you are looking for.

Awesome pointers as usual… my only fear is that my current employer will see it and what wil they think or do? I have a whole family to look after and if I got the sack then I would up shit creek without a boat and a paddle 😂

ahh yeah i totally understand that. I am in the same boat.

If you update your linked in, the normally ask something like "do you want to let your connections know about your updates" or something. just click no.

I would be really surprised if you current company noticed...if they do and they do say something (which they most likey wont) just say you wanted to update your linked in.....and thats it. no more no less. they cant get mad about that

You can update your LI and be generic with your updates. Recruiters will want to see that you’re a top performer or show you have skills, manage a specific quota, manage size of deals, how many X customers you’ve brought in the last 2 years, etc. nothing that’s eye catching for your current employer to be worried about
